The AR-15 and the M-16 have the same caliber and everything else is the same except for the receiver and the internal parts of the receiver; connector, disconnector, bolt, etc. The AR-15 is the civilian version and the M-16 is the military version. The AR is semi-auto and the M-16 is semi-auto, 3 shot burst and full auto.
Generally, when people refer to an assault rifle, they are referring to an M16 which has been used in every major war.
