On July 14, 2026, the U.S. House passed H.R. 1181, the Protecting Privacy in Purchases Act. This important legislation, sponsored by Representative Riley Moore (R-WV-02), would prohibit credit card companies from tracking the purchases of constitutionally protected items like firearms and ammunition.

NRA-ILA has advocated for this commonsense protection for a number of years and has written both on this bill and on the issue generally. This bill would prevent a backdoor registry of law-abiding gun owners by credit card companies which could then be accessed by the federal government and even third parties like gun control groups.

H.R. 1181 passed the U.S. House with a bipartisan vote of 221-201, and will now proceed to the U.S. Senate for consideration. NRA-ILA would like to thank Representatives Riley Moore, Richard Hudson (R-NC-09), and Andy Barr (R-KY-06) for their leadership on this important bill along with all members of the U.S. House who voted for its passage.

NRA-ILA will continue to push this bill as it continues through the legislative path and will update you of any important actions.
