When I was a Security Policeman in the Air Force, 1983-1986.
We practiced changing out magazines M16, before we reached the last couple rounds, we might lose a round in the magazine but the chamber was never empty. When you shot the last round and the bolt locks back we called it a dead man’s bolt.
Some of us got pretty good at counting down 20-30 round magazines.
