The carry handle was already there before the top-mounted charging handle. Look at prototype X03.
What better way for clumsy big mittens to grab a rifle than to design a handle that easily accommodates gloved hands.

When i was in the military I was taught it was a carry handle, maybe not everyday on the battlefield, but you'll use it when you store arms
During basic training in 1987,dont let drill sergeant catch you because you'll get SMOKED.😅 We were warn not to hold it by the carry handle
They told us not to carry it like that in Basic, but my 20" is a bulky boi
So thats why i carry them by the "carry handle"? Its rather effective for a carry handle to tbh.
