The CMMG Banshee 9mm pistol splits the difference between a rifle and a typical handgun. Let’s try all three and see what makes the Banshee AR pistol unique.

Before we start pulling the trigger, I should mention one or two things about the Banshee. First, it’s not an AR pistol as you know it. It ain’t blowback, and it ain’t gas-driven. Instead it uses a proprietary delayed blowback system that extracts the brass after pressures have fallen. This means cooler operation, a relatively clean action and chamber, low recoil, and accuracy like you can’t believe. Seriously, in the next video we’ll be pinging steel at 200 yards with Streak tracer ammo in the middle of the night.

Aside from today’s hiccups with Remington ammo (blecch) and my own untested loads, the Banshee proved to be reliable, extracting and ejecting cleanly. Then there’s the total experience, which is completely unique. Even without a muzzle brake, the rifle bounces quickly from target to target, double tap to slow aimed fire. With a red dot sight it moves telepathically, putting each round right where you want it. There’s something to be said for a nice trigger and a pistol brace that can fit the shoulder. We had some guys try using the CMMG RipBrace as intended, and it works great as long as you can get it securely around your forearm.

I tried a couple of runs using the Ultradyne C4 sights instead of the red dot, and I liked them very, very much. I’m a sucker for good iron sights, and these are phenomenal. They get on target quickly, allowing you to see your target instead of hiding it behind a post.
Now here’s the kicker: we had a seven-year-old boy take the Banshee for three runs of the course, and he LOVED it. Afterward he kept talking to his dad about using it again.

In total, the 9mm Banshee was fast into action, quick to point, quick to get back on target, and precise enough that we could put lead anywhere we wanted. We think it could make a great truck rig and close-range gun, especially for home defense. It’s quicker and more stable than a pistol; shorter and more maneuverable than an AR 15 carbine. ‘Course, if you want more thump, don’t miss the runs that Dallas took with his 7.62x39mm SBR.

Big thanks to guest testers Billy, Dallas, Corey, Wyatt, and Kedrick! And extra-big thanks to Tate for letting us use his field.
