Don’t forgot a lot of states restrict how many bullets you can have when hunting. That’s also why most bolt action guns only allow 3-7 in the magazine. If you got caught hunting with 30 rounds you could get in a lot of trouble.
With 25 yrs of hunting experience bullet type and shot placement matters more than what caliber you use. For medium size game using .223/5.56 I'd look for the heavier grain bullet with a soft lead point and if that's not an option an open tip match style bullet works well also

Lol my state allows me to use an ar for hunting. Ar-15 and ar-10. California is such a joke. Couldn’t imagine living there.

i use a bolt action 270 tikka. it punched a good 1 inch exit hole in my 4th deer. when i get an ar however im going to try hunting with it
