You can do that, but your barrel nut wont come off the barrel with the front sight still on. So really whats the reason for even removing the barrel nut?
Thats how i learned to do it 40 years ago, i though this was pretty common knowledge. Like everything else thiugh, i suppose some knowledge gets lost over time. After reading the comments, good on you for updating the younger folks.

Wait if the barrel needs to be replaced why would it matter?
Thank you so much. Everyone i asked wanted me to remove the fsb and the pinned extension on my 10.5 upper just so i could swap the upper receiver.

Didn’t plan to, but the goddamn roll pin fell outta the front sight and looks like the other one is missing.
