An AR-15–style rifle is a lightweight semi-automatic rifle based on the Colt AR-15 design, differing from the original ArmaLite AR-15 with selective fire and closely related to the military M16. ArmaLite sold the AR-15 patent and trademarks to Colt in 1959 after military rejection.
