A lot of commercial trends for AR-15s trickle down from what the military is issuing. In this video, Brandon gives his thoughts on the “standard” 16 inch AR-15. Yes, we all know the history of why the NFA went with 16 inches.

  1. M27, also foreign users such the NZDF use a 16in LMT as their standard service rifle. The Brit’s use to issue and still may issue in a limited capacity a 15.7in* barrel variant of the colt canada c8 aka the L119.

Also if it wasn’t for 16in guns the mid length gas system would have likely not be as prolific as it is today and the 16in guns are a super solid balance in ballistics, reliability and handiness.

  2. It's actually because of the m1 carbine.

The NFA used to be 18 inches for rifles but the government sold surplus m1 carbines to the publics and when they realized they just violatsd the nfa, they made a rule change to make it 16 inches since that qas the barrel length of those m1 carbines.

  3. I tried the 20 inch, 16 inch and 14.5. Both the 16 and 14.5 had more recoil than my bb gun or 20 inch. So I bought an 18 inch rifle gas system and hope for good results and BB gun like recoil.

  4. I just laugh at people who think their 16in gun and their stock of winchester white box 223 or PMC bronze TRAINING AMMO think their 1.5in of barrel is going to make a difference versus my 14.5 spitting M855a1, and 62gr Bonded Soft Points or MK262

You can offset issues with your argument over 100fps of velocity, by just choosing an ACTUAL DUTY LOAD for your rifle…..

Ill take a damn 11.5 with 62gr Federal TBBC or MK262 or 70gr Barnes TSX ect over a 16 with winchester 223 ANY DAY in a defensive situation.

My point is, just buy the damn rifle you want. But for God's sake invest in some proper DUTY AMMUNITION and don't just think your training ammo is a good choice "bEcAuSe yOu hAve 100fPs fAStEr bR0!!"

Use whatever gun you want. Honestly you're the one who has to carry it and use it, don't worry about what anyone else thinks…..

  5. Extar EP9 and similiar pistols for the majority of civilians is ideal, 9 is cheaper, easier, and people will actually shoot it. If you actually need (and you do) an AR, get a full sized one and put a good scope on it so you can actually reach out there accurately.

  6. A 16” with a 1-6 that has a good 1x has been my recommendation to new guys for a few years now. That gun can do just about everything, and if they happen to find a deficiency with it, it typically means that they’ve settled in a preferred style of shooting that would necessitate a more specialized build.

  7. Okay, I THINK I've corrected everyone who commented about the M27 IAR.
To anyone yet to receive my ire, note the video title and it's specification of AR-15, then recall the M27 IAR is not an AR-15 variant.
When Brandon uses the term "rifle" in this video, it is in exclusive reference to rifles that function on an AR-15 operating system.

  8. The only functional difference between a GPR and an SPR is how specialized an optic you put on it tbh

Stainless barrels haven't been noticably more accurate than good quality CHF chrome since the mid 2000's. Off the rack ARs in the $1200-1500 range will generally be more than accurate enough to do the DMR thing.
