  1. I use mine for training I run the CCI and Winchester and it runs like a dream I believe there's a break in process at first had a couple jams but now it runs like a dream love it

  2. I went to the next step and ordered a barrel and bolt from CMMG and built a dedicated upper. I stick to the hi velocity 22 stuff and it shoots just fine and I don't have to worry about fouling the gas tube especially when running suppressed.

  3. These things pay for themselves pretty quick and are a lot of fun, especially for plinking. Accuracy for me has not been great though, like 6moa on a 1moa rifle. I’ve had good luck with CCI Mini Mags.

Heads up, the drop at 100yd is like two feet more than .223, so try not to shoot up your target frame.

If you can get it, the S&W M&P 15-22 is lighter and more accurate. Also better for learning manipulations, but has less part interchangeability with the AR.

  4. Hand cycle some rounds through it and examine the rounds. This will show you if your dragging anywhere. I've gotten the cmmg dedicated 22LR uppers to dump mags of Norma Tac subsonic. I would think yours should also.

  5. Countless good ammo brands and types for mine, tightest group is one of the Winchester Super-X varieties (35 grain, I think). CCI Mini mags (hp and rn), Remington Golden Bullet, Remington Viper, CCI Standard Velocity, Aguila Super Extra High Velocity. The Aguila stuff cannot be mag dumped but works great with one shot per second or so.

Instructions from CMMG specified flat hammers but it works with a curved hammer for me, too. I use a JP Enterprise 3 to 4-1/2 lb spring kit for the trigger but used a standard spring type for the hammer. It’s a blast. I even use single shots of the Aguila Colibri powderless ammo when I want to shoot more quietly. It will not cycle, of course, but it’s not supposed to, as that ammo is only 420 fps or so.

I bought mine a number of years ago when it came with a different type chamber adapter. CMMG replaced my chamber adapter when it split on me. Mine is now the same as current model bolt and it’s excellent.

  6. These are even better as a dedicated .22 lr without the conversion, but with a cmmg barrel in .22 lr. We have like 5/6 of them in different barrel lengths and they come out of the safe the most often. We can shoot them all day for $20~$30.

  7. FYI – I bought the CMMG kit together with a dedicated upper to use for 22LR a few years ago. I saw you had some feed issues with some Ammo… BUT in my experience, the magazines with plastic feed lips flex too much causing feed issues. I bought 3rd party magazines compatible for the CMMG conversion. These 3rd party magazines have steel feed lips and cycle most of the ammo pretty good. I also recommend staying away from bulk box 22LR for any semi-auto application. Bolt, Lever, Revolver are all fine for the cheap bulk box stuff, and in some cases the cheap stuff may be a preferred ammo for such guns, but for semi-auto, stick with the higher quality higher velocity 22 LR if you want to reliably cycle it.

I learned all this the hard way. I bought a box of 525 loose rounds on the cheap. I couldn't load more than 3 rounds at a time in most of my semi-auto 22LR. 3rd or 4th round would jam every time, even if I tried to be very careful on how I stacked the bullets in the magazine. In the end, I used my CMMG converted 22LR AR to burn through about 400 rounds, loading 3 rounds at a time… I had the wife, bless her, sitting there loading the extra magazines 3 rounds each, as I fired them slowly enough for her to keep up…

It was frustrating and I thought I bought a piece of junk… but more and more testing gave me the right formula and I stick with CCI mini-mags, CCI Stingers, and a couple other CCI high velocity rounds because I have found them very reliable in terms of feeding, cycling, and over-all operation of my gun. And I bought a bunch of steel feed lipped magazines. I'd be willing to pay more for the kit if that was what it takes for CMMG to use steel rather than plastic on those magazines.

  8. I've had one of these for a few years and love it. All by itself the conversion is just pure fun but if you really want to change the game add a Franklin binary trigger to your AR and flip the switch. It will make a grown man giggle.

That's not to say there couldn't be some improvements. Really wish CMMG would add a side window/slot to their magazines so that you could grab the followers via a thumb stud to assist in loading. Many other manufacturers magazines do this so I'm not quite sure why they missed the boat unless it's a patent that they can't infringe on. One of these days I will 3D print the Improvement but my Fusion 360 skills are not there yet.

Another thing they could do is invent a speed loader like they have for the 10/22 magazines. Then they could even make some money on it. If you can't tell I hate loading 22lr lmfao.

  9. Have 2 and love them. Shot mostly with federal range and field 38gr 1260fps some mini mags and some browning performance 40gr 1435fps. Works great, once in the blue moon have failure but rarely. Accuracy surprisingly good.
