President Joe Biden shared his condolences Tuesday after a deadly mass shooting at a Colorado grocery store, and urged Congress to tighten gun laws in response to the killings.

“I don’t need to wait another minute, let alone an hour to take common sense steps that will save the lives in the future,” Biden said at the White House, calling for federal laws to expand background checks and ban assault-style weapons and high-capacity magazines.

Boulder police identified Ahmad Al Aliwi Alissa, 21, as a suspect in the Colorado shooting, which left 10 dead. He was arrested Monday afternoon at King Soopers grocery store and has been charged with 10 counts of first-degree murder, officials said.

“I want to say to the community, I am so sorry this incident happened,” Boulder Police Chief Maris Herold said at a press conference Tuesday morning. “We are going to do everything in our power to make sure this suspect has a thorough trial and we do a thorough investigation.”

Biden in his remarks said he had been briefed on the shooting by Attorney General Merrick Garland and FBI Director Christopher Wray. He said he has also spoken with Colorado Gov. Jared Polis and is being kept informed by local law enforcement officers.

Biden noted that among the dead was police officer Eric Talley, 51, who had been the first to arrive at the scene of the shooting.

“Every time an officer walks out of his or her home, and pins that badge on, the family member that they just said goodbye to wonders subconsciously, will they get that call, the call that his wife got?” Biden said.

He said he would not speculate about the alleged killer’s motivations “until we have all the facts” — but stressed that lawmakers should not hesitate to take action.

Biden advocated reinstating bans on assault-style weapons and high-capacity magazines, and called on the Senate to “immediately” take up two House-passed bills aimed at closing loopholes in the background-check system.

“This should not be a partisan issue,” he said.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said earlier Tuesday that he is committed to bringing that legislation to the floor.

“This Senate is going to debate and address the epidemic of gun violence in this country,” Schumer said. “Today our hearts are with the people of Colorado, and with everyone whose lives have been touched by gun violence.”

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said his caucus would look at Democrats’ gun-reform proposals and “have a full, robust discussion” — but he cast doubt on the possibility of bipartisan agreement.

“There have been deep-seated philosophical differences between Republicans and Democrats about how to deal with gun violence,” McConnell told reporters.

Biden on Tuesday also signed a proclamation ordering flags be flown at half-staff at the White House, military posts, naval vessels and upon all public buildings.

It’s the second time in less than a week that Biden has called for flags to be lowered in the wake of a mass shooting, following the killing of eight people at spas in the Atlanta area.

Before Biden’s remarks, former President Barack Obama released a statement that called on “those with the power to fight this epidemic of gun violence to do so.”

“A once-in-a-century pandemic cannot be the only thing that slows mass shootings in this country,” Obama’s statement said.

  1. In our second amendment of the United States of America it says” A well regulated militia being necessary to the secretary ever free state the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed” now joe u decide u either stop being a dumb ass and let the people live there lives or get dragged out of the white house and get hanged by the people

  2. First off, what is an ASSAULT WEAPON? Anything can be an assault weapon. A pencil can be an assault weapon if used in a deadly fashion. The rifles that look scary (AR-15) IS NOT a military rifle – I repeat NOT a military rifle and it NEVER has been. It is underpowered and is only semi-automatic. The caliber is so small it really cannot be considered a proper big game rifle. The truth is it looks scary but does not have the fire power of an average deer rifle like a 30.06 or .308. Stop using the term assault rifle because it's only used to strike fear by the media and politicians to get the American people to buy in that it's the guns that are the root of the problem…they are not. Mental health and people who see issues with individuals and don't say something are the problem. There needs to be dialogue on both sides and an agreement that is practical and that will really make a difference. The laws that are being proposed now are just knee jerk reactions to the problem and will do little if nothing to stop senseless violence.

  3. As a minor with little to no political stance I completely disagree with this. I understand why he thinks banning guns will stop the violence but I am a young woman who grew up in the ghetto. Just because u ban something doesnt make it go away, there will always be a loophole. Look what happened with the prohibition in the 20’s it was illegal but everyone still drank. This is a problem that needs to be solved but not in the way he is leaning

  4. I feel terrible for the families that had loved one's killed and I pray for them. But if I had a family that was killed by a nut case I wouldn't punish the inacent that had nothing to do with it. I would grab my ar15 and go after the Sobs myself.

  5. America is the most dangerous place in the world! And that is because they prefer to sacrifice thousands people lives from shooting and attacks than to forbide the weapons in the country due to they have a huge profit from the guns! TERRIBLE

  6. This guy doesn’t know anything about guns. This is the guy who thinks that “AR-14s” and “30 caliber magazine clips” are the problem. He also suggested that for home protection you but a 13 gauge side shotgun and fire a couple shots out the front door if you’re worried. We elected an idiot…but that was our only option.

  7. These last 2 shooters both obtained their guns legally, by passing background checks, as were every major shooting in the last few years. (Vegas shooter, UVA Tech shooter, Colorado movie shooter, Amish school shooter, Navy Base shooter, Dallas sniper….
Sandy Hook,….all guns obtained legally. There is no way to predict human behavior. And people who are intent on doing harm can obtain guns illegally.

  8. Assault weapons are already banned. What he means is they can violate the second amendment under the pretext of the nanny state.
Congress shall make no law infringing on the rights detailed in the constitution. But executive orders aren't law.

  9. This reminds me of the movie Tombstone where instead of arresting the people responsible, for the crime, they banned carrying guns in town?

Arresting the criminals stopped the nonsense, especially when they knew who the criminals were………..

  10. So when armed thugs break into biden and other political officials houses i am betting there is not 1 firearm in there to protect them since yall so against guns right?
