Myth Testing: Will holding the forward assist on an AR15 blow it up?

Our friends at InRangeTV made a comment that a viewer warned them that holding the forward assist on an AR15 forward would blow the gun up. If memory serves, this claim came from a Soldier who said his rifle grenaded when he accidentally fired it from around cover and held the assist forward. So, we find out if this is true or not.

We also fire a Law Tactical Folder while folded to see if it damages the rifle or the Law Tactical Folder.

  1. I wouldn't say the myth is completely busted. I let a new shooter shoot one of my M forgeries, and she had her thumb on the forward assist. It wasn't a catastrophic failure but it did break forward assist and it jammed bolt halfway into the open position. It was a pain in the ass to repair. It didn't hurt anything but the assist. How this happened to my rifle and not the DPMS idk. All I can tell you is the Upper was a standard Wilson Combat and the ammo was Fed 855. Im not discounting your test, I do agree with the assessment that the rifle should NOT explode but I can say the forward assist COULD break and stop the firearm.

  2. sadly it appears the Democratic party will attempt to ban all assault weapons. They call it assault weapons, but what if a responsible person or a police officer is holding it for our safety? Does Kamala Harris call her personal body guards AR15 an assault weapon or a life insurance policy? The global elite hire private security, that is why the elite love to ban weapons, they are protected. Meanwhile, the hard working middle class get all the freedoms stripped from them.

  3. I don't believe of stupidity of many people which believe this "myths"… Any of this methods can't harm the rifle (yes, they can harm the shooter's thumb or fingers, but this is not essence of the problem). Even if you completely REMOVE (or plug) gas tube, AR15 will be in this moment as a simple bolt action rifle.

  4. Unbiased, as he shows a communist CNN shirt. Do you have Fox one as well or are we going to pretend like this makes sense. (You know your audience. Not all, but a majority.)

Can't say consistency is a right winger ideal. "Do as I say, not as I do," is more like it.

  5. I’m not an expert on firearms at all, but could the difference be that this is a brand new ar15 (even one that’s not mil-spec) vs an m4 that’s probably had thousands of rounds through it and probably more then a few soldiers handling it and probably abusing it?

  6. A lot of guys in "suppressor circles" do this often on purpose… In effect it keeps the chamber in the locked closed position (making their AR's single shot in nature).. They claim its a quieter report for that one shot.

  7. If it's not fully engaged in a tooth in the bolt carrier, and the bolt & carrier gets some momentum in its rearward travel, and then the plunger engages the bolt………. It's the transfer of energy. Locking it closed is the same as holding the slide closed on a recoil operated pistol.

I hypothesize that under recoil, the fa hit an obstruction, and tried to interact with a bolt carrier at it's maximum velocity.

  8. Time and time again I have personally witnessed Soldiers with dirty weapons hit the bolt release and the bolt will not seat the first round of a FULL magazine all the way into battery. This is why it was designed and every time he/she follows SPORTS (Slap, Pull, Observe, Tap, Squeeze/Safe), the weapon is good to go unless it requires additional remedial action.

  9. I use the forward assist a lot when doing weapon checks, (making sure there is a round chambered after racking). The halfway cock needs the forward assist to put the bolt into battery. Wouldn't want my weapon without one.

  10. Why do you say you have "butter fingers" Are you outta bread?
I'm over 6' and i think that gravity has a way of making us pick things up from 6' down and the shorter people are at the advantage so they are not affected by the 6' gravity rule.

  11. I'm not buying what that "soldier" said. If the forward assist is obstructed, and jams up the bolt. It will do nothing but turn your AR into a single shot rifle. All the gas, like a bolt action, will go out the end of the barrel and NOT damage it at all. The same result with the stock folded. I call BS… Now on to the video.

Ok… Told ya. After using a M-16's or M-4's in combat over many years, I know I had my forward assist pressed barriers, trees, rocks, and corners at one time or another… Even if it just got banged under recoil. I never had a part break or detonate in any of my rifles. I can say Marines tend to be hard on their gear and weapons. Still I have never seen nor heard of this happening. With 24+ years behind me in the Marine Corps infantry, 14 years in S.T.A. Plt., and 2 years as a PMI, (Primary Marksmanship Instructor), twice. I can honestly say that there are very few people walking around that have pulled a trigger on an AR platform rifle more than I have. IMO… If a part breaks then maybe that part wasn't exactly up to par… No matter who built it. Everyone spits out a lemon here and there. Good stuff MAC.
