AR vs AK comparison with FASTEST shooter ever, Jerry Miculek: Part 2

Jerry gives us a comprehensive breakdown of the two systems and shows us some of the pros and cons of each platform. The American made AR-15 (or M16 and M4) designed by Eugene Stoner and the Soviet AK-47 (or the more modern AK-74) designed by Mikhail Kalashnikov. The rifles used in the shooting portion of the video are an AK-74 style rifle shooting a 5.45×39 and an M4 Carbine style rifle shooting a 5.56 NATO or .223 Remington. The AK-74 was chosen for being a more modern style of the rifle that is more closely comparable to the AR style cartridge.

  1. My aftermarket Ak trigger is lighter with a quicker reset than his competition ARs trigger. Also they make great railed dust covers, forends and gas tubes for mounting optic and accessories. I like jerry but he's a AR guy to the core and doesn't give the AK the justice it deserves.

  2. What the hell kind of AR is that? It looks like a solid polymer piece! Butt-stock, pistol grip and lower are all one piece?? I have never seen one like that before. Almost looks like an Airsoft.

  3. great video, both great proven weapons. I'd lean just slightly (51 to 49) to the AK since it is more civilian friendly for basic maintenance and most combat or survival situations you will likely be fighting in the 100-400 range. Over that I'd use a hunting rifle. Thanks for the great video.

  4. I hate to doubt Jerry as he has forgotten more about guns than I will ever know but that 5.45 round does have a steel core.  Somebody made a pistol AK in that cal. and Obama banned importation of the cheap surplus because it was declared to be armor piercing pistol ammo.  His particular rounds may be lead core.

  5. for all you fanboys this 2 part series made it abundantly clear that the ak is for reliability, the ar is for accuracy. Both rifles are superior to the other given the right situation. Why choose an ak for urban combat when you can use an ar? at the same time why use an ar in the middle of siberia when you have an ak? see what i mean? both rifles are superior to the other in the right situation. neither is a "clear winner" they are BOTH amazing rifles.

  6. No round is both good against hard surfaces and tissue, that's just a complete lie.
The attempt at making such a round is what makes the 5.56 so endlessly inferior to the 5.45 and there's a reason why the 5.56 has a reputation with worldwide military as a mediocre and insufficient round, while the 5.45 is called the "Poison Bullet".

  7. The AR can be fixed in field very easy with parts kits. AK problem you would have to send it in to gun smith. I love my Sam7 Bulgarian AK but the AR is much more ergonomic and easier to modify.

  8. Kalashnikov designed his weapon for war. In all conditions. The big trigger guard and long curved trigger was designed for winter warfare so that it can be used with thick gloves. It was also built with high tolerance on the moving parts to accommodate all weather conditions. He deliberately designed it with the bare minimum of moving parts so that the illiterate can be trained on it in a matter of minutes. In Soviet doctrine of the time it was not about accuracy but about the amount of fire power that can be laid down. Thus the rudimentary sight system. The AR is a nice weapon but give me a AK any day.

  9. I don't know about you, but getting shot by 5.56×45 just leaves a hole in you; But getting shot by a 7.62×39 brings all your inerts out from the back, not to mention the tumbling effect of a 5.45×39, which leaves wherever it hits mushy like tofu.

  10. Just one thing- if your AK-74 is broken – 99% you are sleeping now. If your AR broken – you have fucked up.
P.S.if AK 74 is broken you actually can remove fckin ANY borken shit  , what i can do if my AR broken…?Nothing.

  11. AK triggers are really easy to change out…. And the G2 triggers, Arsenal two stages, etc. are pretty good. In fact, I remember when I got my first crappy WASR-10 and I was like "MAN this G2 trigger is SOOO much better than my issued M16A4's"…

  12. If you have 1000$ and 1000$ only and you had to choose one of the guns for a SHTF situation you'd go with the AK. Because you can get the rifle for right around 700 bucks and 300$ for 1080 rounds of red army standard ammo.

  13. We all know the AK and 7.62 round is better.  As an American ex submariner, I have no pride lost in admitting the truth.  Russian people may be poor and starving but they know how to make a rifle.

  14.   There are a couple of basics that separate the two. Jerry comes right out and says the AK " may " function better when its completely dirty..  Geez..  that's kinda a given to almost any shooter thats followed its history.. nothing really informative on that observation unless you're a new shooter. The trigger pull is better on the AR… ok, I'll accept that..  but that's wasn't  the AK's purpose..  I will concede that due the non combat usage of the units coming into the states they could use a little updating and be more appealing to the shooter of today as far as accuracy, tightening of tolerances and availability of add on goodies. BUT….  then it fails to be an AK…and the AK was never meant to be a long range weapon.  The statement that  downsizing of ammo is of benefit to the soldier can hardly be questioned ..  but most of us aren't going to be lugging around 50 lbs of ammo no matter what caliber it happens to be..  so the answer is simply how you want to spend your money.. what floats your boat as they used to say..
