For some reason, we decided it would be a good idea to shoot a one pound propane tank. Range is about 40 yards. There is a lighted propane torch near the tank to act as a source of ignition.

We conducted this “experiment” four times. The first two worked great. The second two shots failed to ignite, probably because the propane torch was about out of fuel and the shock wave blew out the source of ignition each time.

The tank was shot with an AR-15, .223 cal. The bullet was 55gr JHP. There was no shrapnel involved in the explosion. The bullet completely penetrated both sides of the steel propane cylinder, and there was no tearing caused by the explosion.
