First AR 15? Don't Make These 5 Mistakes

I'm a big fan of having one lower with multiple uppers. Like 11.5 and 14.5, especially if you are taking your time and slowly building your first rifle out. it makes buying a nice trigger or FRT easier to justify since its effectivly a one time purchase

I get what you're saying but I really think if anyone is new, get an entry level PSA and get some rounds in. You probably won't really know what you like starting out. Research is good, but being able to physically see and shoot an entry level build I feel is good to start out on. Buying a PSA or Bear Creek Arsenal (may not want to go that low) then disassembling will help alot of people get to know the parts that they may want to change. Good video as usual though.

I think bcg is overstated, pretty much any milspec chrome lined phosphate C158 bcg is gonna work fine, I've only ever swapped gas rings on any bcg but I've tried nitride 9310, chrome, and chrome lined phosphate and they're all perfectly serviceable but I tend to always pick C158 just because it's known to not have breakages from normal use compared to some 9310 bolts, I don't like to spend more than $125-$150 on a BCG

Started out as a Sport 2. The lower receiver and buffer tube are the only original parts left.

My first rifle was a PSA 15 in 5.56. ODG grip and a blade brace, I bought for $375.

Still have it today but have swapped/added – SOLGW blem lower, Geissele super dynamic trigger, Radian Raptor SD, B5 grip, SBA 5 brace, all Magpul covers, EOTECH 512, Streamlight Protac 2, and dead air keymo muzzle brake.

I’ll eventually get a BCM upper and almost nothing will be original,and then pair the old lower with most of the original parts and the PSA upper.

My first was actually kind of happenstance… long story, but I just so happen to be in the right place at the right time and got a rifle for about half price. Still have it. Still really like it. Are there things I would have done differently if I could’ve chosen for that same price? of course. But it was sort of a beggars can’t be choosers situation. Still shoots crazy smooth and no issues.

Mine was a freaking Bushmaster pos around 2010. Since then have built like 7 guns using Aero, DD, Geissele, and Griffin. Current set ups are URGIs and DD M4, Mk18 on Griffin Mk2 ambi lowers so I can keep reliving my GWOT days and thinking how cool I used to be 🤣

First biuld was a 10.3 ati protac 2 pinty redot that came with it (never held zero) vortex crossfire redot replaced it before i left the store and a magpul afg and mystery 45degree irons

I still have it but it has the crossfire II 1-4 on a peppr mount

I now understand women and multiple pairs of shoes…AR15s are a man's equivalent.

I’ve tinkered on my first AR, a simple carbine length S&W sport II(replaced barrel with faxon mid length and free floating hand guard, accidently made a lightweight smooth recoil ready rifle)

This past year I made a mk18 clone-ish pistol with the stripped Daniel upper, matching bolt and vented charging handle idk the fancy brand

A few years ago would’ve grabbed and aero and the only stuff was bcm $450 or PSA…..so I went with a PSA pistol lower(forgot that it was a pistol type so it wasn’t a buffer tube so I had to order & swap it)

Got it done with a surefire socom RIS II

After having tinkered, I would’ve done my first at differently and maybe assembled a mid length rifle from the start (07:15 lol)

my first build was an all FDE Aero M4E1 setup (16 inch) with a BA Hanson barrel and magpul furniture (I still have it)

My very first build was a 7.5 inch 300 blackout build from PSA. Learned a lot then. My second build was your $1500 16 inch rifle build. I chose the complete lower option from BCM for that build.

Consumerism and impatience got me once. Won’t let it get me again.

PSA (500 bucks) back a few years ago when I graduated college and got a big boy job. Now I've put over 3k$ into it and the only PSA part that still exists on it is the upper receiver. Its now my dedicated SPR and gas gun comp gun.

i built my first and only ar couple years ago. i call it my blem-15. PSA blem stripped lower, bcm blem stripped upper, kak bcg, schmidt 2s curved trigger, roscoe 14.5 w/ kak a2 comp. sionics handrail, holosun 403.
my main regret is that i went with like a 12" handrail on a 14.5 barrel so it has about 2" of barrel showing.

My first build was a PSA Blem lower with a PA-15 upper. It was a gift from my step dad on my 18th birthday. Put in an aero Ambi charging handle and a BCM BCG. Have about 6k rounds through it with no issues. Definitely not my coolest gun but she’s served me well, especially considering how much I put into it.

The only one I'll disagree with is no. 4. I think it's fine to have a spare rifle setup similarly if it's meant as a backup in case you need to use your pistol in a self defense shooting or you train extensively with some setup to the point you need a dedicated training gun or cycle them during training

First rifle was sporter Saiga 762 that was the closest thing to an arsenal sgl as I could afford. Took me a few years but now have a really nice Ak 103 sidefolder

I got a psa and I am in the process of upgrading parts. Very solid rifle for 400. Learn cheap, upgrade gear after you upgrade skills.

Build my first ar about a year ago in 300 Blackout and it's my favorite.

My latest AR build is a Sharps Bros Warthog 5.56 with all Radian Weapons internals, a Black River Tactical Barrel and Driven Arms Furniture

I agree with everything but number 5. If you are shooting ( like real deal shooting every-week to get better, as I am) having a back up in the same caliber/ maybe not same exact barrel length ) he’s definitely not a bad idea.

It's interesting. I started my first "build" last year. I've been adding gear slowly and on a budget, but I'm the "buy once, cry once" guy. I've been told I need to consider learning cheaper components that would be more common in a SHTF scenario. My friend is extremely experienced though and helped me learn all of these lessons early on. Finding someone, in your personal life, to learn from is huge. Honestly, I'm finding it challenging to make the same mistakes that he learned the hard way. I hope that isn't a mistake.

Visual Blem Geissele URGI/Super duty build on a LWRC lower that a buddy sold to me for a steal. Still have it. I likely only spent 2k on it, including the Eotech, and cloud defense light

My first real build was polished and thought over. Everything was planned in advance. It’s supposed to be an ideal all round gun good at most things but doesn’t need to be the best at any particular task.

The gun is a total shooter, I’ve had it about 3 months. the scope leaves a bit to be desired but I really wanted an Lpvo for an affordable price to get training. It’s an easy upgrade to a nicer scope down the road.

For sure build yourself! You quickly learn how simple and genius the system is. Very few tools needed. This will allow you to fix any issues that arise as you will know how they work together. Just be realistic a 1/2 inch gas gun is a rare thing but if accuracy is your game a 1 inch gun is completely doable. Enjoy Eugene Stoner was a genius
