On this episode of Ultimate Barrier Testing, we will compare the performance of the 450 Bushmaster to the 458 Socom and the 50 Beowulf on 4 different targets. Each target is worth 25 points (winner takes all), for a grand total of 100 points. Whichever cartridge ends up with the highest score will be the winner. Testing was setup at 50 yards. Steel is A529 grade 55 mild steel. 1 inch = 25.4 mm. Thanks for watching!

  1. I went with the .450 Bushmaster, because it's the most available, affordable, and easy to reload ammo, due to the straight walls. All of them will take any game on the planet.

  2. Hey, I found your video. I’ve been watching them for a while. Instead of using the sand you should get a ballistic gel block. We could get a lot more information from looking at the terminal ballistics inside of gel over a sand block.

  3. I'm surprised at all the terminal ballistic comparisons when the firearm actions vary. Everyone knows that semi-auto's absorb energy, reduce recoil, and ultimately affect the terminal ballistics enough to notice. I like seeing the comparisons and the very playfully relaxed scenes. I know that testing is done using what sponsors are willing to contribute. Bolt actions beat all because lever actions don't have long enough barrels typically.

  4. Would be interested in seeing the same test with bullets heavier than 500 grains. Bet the penetration would be a lot more. Oh wait, that would only be the .458 SOCOM.

  5. I like the .458 Socom because it's a decent round that's all military from start to finish. It was developed after the Mogadishu incident. They found that the .300 blkout was almost as capable except with the anti material aspect that they added to the trials. The military brass wanted a round that was close to the old .45-70 and just as capable of slinging a heavy 670 grain slug but at what.

  6. Replace those adjustable stocks with a fixed AR stock and install the stock weight Brownells sells that fits inside the stock storage space, your shoulder will appreciate it much. Some blacksmithing required to fit the weight, but a hammer is all you need.

  7. Only reason these didn't go through the steel is cuz they're hollow points. Normal FMJs, wouldn't spread so much. Plus, engine blocks are made of hardened steel. Even if it doesn't penetrate, Hard steel isn't gonna deflect an inch and a half like mild steel. It's gonna crack and shatter

  8. Eh, for big bore ARs like this you’re really only gonna use them for hunting or predator defense so them being BCA made isn’t really a big deal. You’re not using these to shoot thousands upon thousands of rounds at the range.

  9. I just watched this again, and I'm wondering how the .400 Legend would do in this competition. The muzzle energy is halfway between the .450 Bushmaster and the .50 Beowulf loads you shot, but with the diameter being ~.05"-.10" smaller, it should penetrate better than the rest. It might even make it through the steel plate, where the other 3 failed.

  10. Bear Creek is always getting crap. I shoot thousands of rounds though my ARs each year. I have several Bear Creek uppers. While they are no frills, they still perform very well and are decently made. If you like to spend a ton of money on your ARs then i wouldn't recommend them. However, if you are on a budget and appreciate a good value…they are great.

  11. I think a person could really jack up some hand loads for the .458 socom. Those velocities you got at the end were very underwhelming my comparison to the .450 bushmaster….

  12. Can i make a recommendation,do a video on the steinel brass spike ammo for the 50 beowulf. Its the hands down the best ammo ever made for that caliber and its the ammo the military uses at checkpoints for disabling vehicles. No one else makes the all brass ammo like that for the 50 beowulf and no other ammo has the piercing power that the spike has and its all i will run in mine.

  13. When i was looking at big bore ar's, i went with the 558 socom. Am i disjointed ate waving this? Nope. Why not? Because i already have a 45 raptor on the 308 platform for high velocity. The 458 was intended for lobbing stupidly heavy chunks of lead at subsonic velocities through a .46 suppressor. 600 grains at 1000fps is almost comedic when it's that quiet
