I'd highly recommend watching BoreBuddy's videos on tuning a 22lr AR15. It will help diagnose and eliminate the common problems you can have.
If you are serious about running a 22lr for home defense, then I'd recommend getting a factory built 22lr like a M&P 15-22 or a ruger 10-22 or a professionally built dedicated 22lr.
My personal 22lr AR15 uses a dedicated 22lr CMMG barrel and then all borebuddy internals with 15-22 mags.
Also you don't need to buy a specific charging handle as borebuddy sells a 22lr AR Charging Handle Insert if you didn't want to 3d print your own.
