The forward assist is to move the bullet into the chamber, if it should not seat all the way on it's own. Some reasons could be a very dirty gun in need of cleaning, a weak/ half assed charging, or if you need you be quiet and can 't have the gun make noise during charging…you slowly ride the charging handle quietly, than use the forward assist to properly seat the round in the chamber.
Don't worry about color parts, Radian is way superior. Strike industries has some validity as well, but Radian all the way.
