The point of painting the rifle is to help break up the shape and also cut down on reflection so its harder to identify. When painting you want to try and get your patterns at the edges, this is what will break up the overal shape. Using veg is a good technique but i lay a dark base of green, then lay your veg down and outline it with brown, shift that veg slightly and hit it with black, then you leave that layer of veg where it is while adding another patterned layer and finally spray lightly with your tan. You will have natural shapes/patterns and "shadows" that will really break up thee outline of the rifle
