Authorities in New Mexico are investigating a shooting captured on video that left one person shot during a rally for a Don Juan de Oñate statue on Thursday.
The video posted on Instagram shows a scuffle after a group of men approach the suspect who was wearing a “MAGA” hat and later jumps a small retaining wall to escape before pulling out a gun, CNN says.
It’s unclear what led to the altercation that ended in the shooting, according to CNN.
During a press conference Thursday, Rio Arriba County Sheriff Billy Merrifield said the suspect was taken into custody. He’s been identified as 23-year-old Ryan Martinez of New Mexico.
The shooting victim is reportedly receiving medical care but right now, their condition is unknown, CNN says.
The statue was taken down in 2020. a rededication was scheduled to take place Thursday.

Suspect for what? Why are you half assing his capture? He actually followed his concealed handgun training pretty well. He tried to escape, got surrounded pulled shot and escaped. He very well could get off without charges because these guys have zero authority to arrest him and he was out numbered by about 8. Don't play stupid games.

Looks like a clear case of self defense to me. I’m being attacked by 3-4 people , my hood is being pulled over my head , I have no idea what’s about to happen, at this point I’m scared for my life and I’m firing a single round and retreating . If he has a permit , he might only get charged for not having his weapon holstered . As he should .

They attacked him, because he was being abusive towards them and gave up his right to live. His crime? He showed up at their rally wearing a MAGA hat, therefore he was attacked for not catering to their feelings and should be beat down until he believed the same way they did. He is lucky that they were so tolerant.
