Why I Hunt With An AR-10

This hunting season I decided to switch to the AR platform. I break down all the reasons why in this video. Comment below what you hunt with and why.

  1. Why an AR10?

Because there is a reason why the AR is considered the most high utility, situation adaptable, and user configurable rifle for the modern rifleman.

All it takes to down an animal is a single good shot,

But a single good shot doesn't solve every problem you can encounter. A semi auto allows for you to handle such problems.

Idk about y'all, but if I got charged by a mountain lion or a bear whilst deer hunting, having a semi auto 308 makes me feel much better.

  2. New Zealand used deer hunting to help their troops back in the Vietnam era. They have (or had) an overabundance of deer due to no natural predators. This is not to say some of us never lost that urge to get our own meat.

  3. There is another carry option for your bolt action and pump shotgun. I believe it came to use in Africa 100 years ago during the double barrel rifle era; talking about strong side inverted carry. Say if you were right handed, carry it muzzle down on your right shoulder gun in back. When you want to shoot, simply reach with your left hand and grab the fore stock over the strap, thumb down and the gun will be released to your shoulder nearly as fast as a man can draw a pistol. Old school. I would carry like this all the time, very effective unless in harsh terrain.

  4. Hi 3 of 7 Project friends, to solve the loosening of the castle nut: I highly recommend asking a good machinist (if it can't be bought anywhere) to machine a spring for the castle nut, the spring's end could have a machinist made internal tooth (like an internal tooth washer, like the washers that's on iMac RAM module bay doors) or a hole has to be made on the castle nut then the end of the spring goes into that as wrapped internally as possible so it doesn't come off- a stainless spring steel perhaps. For good measure apply thread lock blue (will need torque to unscrew and/or bit of heat is best) or red threadlock (more torque and/or more heat to loosen)- this hopefully will minimize vibrations. Internal tooth washers if placed in all screws if it fits all the parts of gun could improve anti-vibration (w/ threadlock of chose, red or blue for good measure) and will prevent screws from falling off (real-world disassembly is possible if one will camp on top of of the tree with those cool tree tent).

Test things first with a test pipe with the same thread and diameter (and metal even).

    God bless, may this help.

  5. Highly highly agree especially with a .308 my cousin hunts with a 20” barrel .223 and hes gotten a few deer and just raves about how nice and practical it is to use an ar platform to hunt wild game

  6. Totally agree with your reasoning for hunting with an AR. I’ve carried my AR 10 .308 many times over the years to the deer woods. I don’t carry it exclusively though. Because I have so many choices. 😂🤣😂😂😂 And I try and show them all some love. Lol

  7. Thank you for the inspiration. This video is the reason I just picked a Ruger SFAR. I'm partially paralyzed in my right arm and shoulder and the lightweight SFAR fits just the bill. Add to that the sad state our country is in right now, everyone should become more proficient with whatever platform they choose. God Bless.

  8. I converted an LR-308 over to 8.6 blackout this year, as well as replacing a 300 blackout barrel on a pistol I plan to use for hunting hogs. The 300 blackout has a 1:5 twist barrel and I'm planning to shoot Hornady 110 gr CX bullets. The 8.6 blackout will take any game in North America with supersonic and med size game easily with subsonic. FWIW, I don't think I've ever left my fly open for an entire video.🤣

  9. AR10 .308 18” barrel shooting 168 grain Norma. Took a smaller buck this past season from about 150yd. Great fun it is heavier, but gets me time behind the scope and more aware of where to put head to get in the eye box every time with minimal movement.

  10. I can see the AR being a great platform in the South but the West is dominated by bolt action rifles. Long 10+ mile hikes calls for an ultralight bolt action rifle thats capable of making first round impacts out to 700+ yards

  11. I put together an AR-15 chambered in 350 Legend with a Burris 1-6x LPVO last summer. I used it last deer season and it worked like a dream. It was pretty comfortable to do a lot of walking with when doing drives and long walks to shooting positions, just remember to keep the dust cover closed.

  12. Perfect logic and who the hell wants a bolt action should you run into wolves or cougars, need to defend with multiple shots. Paper or steel targets don't move and attack, wildlife can and sometimes does so faster than you can sight and fire within common hunting range. You can be a former Special Operators and not get off a shot before attacked by damn sneaky cats in trees etc.
