AR15 is a type of rifle not a caliber but I assume they are discussing the .223 or 5.56mm cartridge. It’s kinda low on the power scale compared to many other centerfire rifle calibers. It’s the weapon of choice because it’s probably the most common or popular semiautomatic rifle. The MOST common factor is these killers are all mentally ill and could have used any firearm to kill as many unarmed victims as they want until they themselves are killed or kill themselves. 32 killed at Virginia Tech with a couple of handguns, a .22 and 9mm pistol.

Why are libs always focused on the AR-15? Most mass shootings are committed with handguns. More people are killed with knives and fists every year than with an AR-15. The deadliest mass shooting in history was committed by one guy with 2 handguns.

I really wish they would have focused more on the damage caused by these kinds of rounds, and less about one specific weapon that fires them. Many, many weapons use .223 rounds. I equally wish there was some kind of middle ground that could be found, because while yes, the AR-15 is a weapon of choice in mass shootings, there are other weapons with the same functionality as the AR-15, but for whatever reason, they are never spoken of or mentioned. It's blaming form over functionality, and I take particular issue with that. If you want to ban AR-15's that fire .223 rounds, because it's an 'assault-style' weapon, then you should also ban, for example, the Ruger mini-14. Both use .223 rounds, are semi-automatic, have readily-available 30-round clips…

I have a very close long-time friend who works as a medical examiner. He has explained in much more graphic detail the damage a firearm round has on a human body. This pediatric surgeon is being kind in glossing over the truly graphic nature of this. I've also seen the results of someone getting shot while on ride-alongs with my local sheriff's department when I used to work there (I was in administration but had road deputies as friends whom I could ride along with from time to time). It's definitely not for the faint of heart!!

In the military we were taught exactly what happens to a human body when hit with rounds from our assault rifles. It's designed to inflict devastating and often non-treatable, non-survivable WOUNDS, severely maiming soldiers & impairing battlefied effectiveness by tying up extra personel and evacuation & medical resources. Once it enters the body the round begins to tumble end-over-end and fly apart, causing HUGE cavities of trauma, destroying tissue, bone and internal organs. It's not just a clean gunshot and it's not pretty. These weapons were designed for the battlefield and in no way whatsoever should be used by civilians, not as a "hobby" or for "personal protection" or even for hunting. My perspective as a trained and educated veteran.
