Best Optic?
Honestly, I like all three. Between Red Dots and Holographics; I have always ran Holosights because of the wider field of view and less parallax. However, now that I’m retired and not going out on ops every night overseas; the shake-awake feature of many of the new red dots is awesome for a closet rifle or truck gun. Then, there is always the fact that my “perfect eyesight” is gone with age and I have astigmatism that is fixed best with a prism.

All three types are great. All have strong points. You decide what is best for you. Thanks for watching, TR.

  1. I have an offset Sig Romeo 5 on my rifle, but the primary is a Bushnell AR Optics FFP 1×4 (illuminated reticle also etched). I had an Aimpoint red dot (2009) on a previous rifle, and it worked just fine too.

  2. Karl what a excellent video thank you so much for your knowledge former Marine and I want to say thank you for your service to our great country I have the Colt m4 5.56 and 223 rounds of cheats what would you recommend me putting on that rifle and also I have the socom M1A 7.62 × 51. I would like to shoot long distance with the socom M1A tell me what you would recommend for that thank you so much

  3. "what is our takeaway? well, carl is a terrible shot at 50m" lol I love the humility, as always.
you started talking about ruggedness toward the end, i was kind of waiting for a sledgehammer to come out but i'm also kinda glad it didn't
    love the work

  4. A surprising amount of rambling. Also, the meat of this video, being the entire shooting portion, was basically irrelevant as it just showed that they were mostly equal in the metric being tested. I personally would have loved a rundown on: 1. Low light performance. 2. A better breakdown on the battery life (such as some actual numbers for comparison. 3. Price. Having an average price, or price range, for each type so we could compare would have been awesome. & 4. If there is any difference in indoor/outdoor use. That would have great.

  5. I'm not convinced those flyers from the Sig were a result of "parallax" but rather not having settled into NPOA; muscle tension in prone will throw a shot off even at 25m. If the rifle/ammo combination is 1.5 or 2 MOA already, that could account for more than half of the horizontal dispersion. But impossible to draw any conclusion without knowing which of the 11 holes came from the first five or the second six. To do this better, lock the gun into a shooting vise and track each point of impact. I would also use a grid pattern target with a precision point of aim such as the tip of a slender triangle. Ultimately, the differences are marginal and each technology suits different peoples' eyes better. Further, mission requirements dictate gear (hunting, self defense, sport, SWaP, etc.). Good to go.

  6. I too am one of those guys at the half century mark and LOVE the prism because of astigmatism. Primary arms are fantastic products and NEVER had a problem dealing with them on anything

  7. Here’s a “con” you might want to consider for the Sig (made by Holosun) and PA is every time you buy one you are funding the Chinese Communist Party arms industry. If you want to take a shit on American technology and American jobs – that’s your choice. But helping to fund the CCP is tantamount to aiding and abetting the enemy. China is NOT our friend. Yes I’ve heard all the excuses – you’re typing on a Chinese computer, blah blah blah. Commodity computers is one thing – but making sure Trijicon and Eotech have the R&D to innovate for our military is part of making sacrifices that civilian patriots do. We can’t all serve but we can damn well support and buy from our arms suppliers. So, add that to the list of pros and cons please.

  8. I know this is a spot for the different optics, but can we take a moment to give props for how absolutely still you can be while taking aim. At least twice I thought my video was buffering because you were so still.

  9. giving a shout out to the old school Armson OEG sight. You SGM, like me are old….lol

personally i was always a big fan of the Eotech. however in recent years i have REdiscovered the IDF's Mepro M21. yea on all my AR's now, except the Ar 10s. battery problem solved.

you don't talk about washout, why not?

  10. Appreciate the practicality of your parallax test even though the results were not all that conclusive. Appears that the deviation attributable to parallax is rather insignificant even for a skilled marksman such as yourself.

  11. Wow, really in depth. Thanks for showing the difference and eliminating the BS about the 3 different types of optics. I'm a civilian who was never enlisted so I've not had a ton of experience with different types, just what I own. I don't have an EOTech or a prism style sight. The Micro Prism with ACSS is on my radar for my AR though since I have a pretty nasty astigmatism in my right eye which is my dominant.

  12. I love Carl, so this rant is not directed at him in particular, but….

At this point red dot batteries last YEARS…IT IS THE LEAST MAINTENANCE item on your gun. If you are training, you will have to change barrels and BCGs before you change batteries on a Holosun, Aimpoint, or Sig Romeo, etc. It warrants no more than 5 seconds of a video in which you tell the viewers "batteries in red dot sights last several years, it's a non issue" and that is it. (except Eotech)

  13. I think in a Chinese invasion you can guarantee they will deploy an EMP rendering a high percentage of electronic sights useless. Everyone make sure you get some backup irons and practice with them.

  14. Great stuff!! As a civilian/recreational/home defense guy, it is easy to get sucked into the marketing and pay for something you don't need. I have the Sig red dot now and it works super well, but maybe a prism?

  15. Lots of great info presented. I have a shake awake on the home defense CQB weapon. I just picked up another longer tool and I’ve been looking at something with the ACSS reticle, cause I’m not going on any missions anytime soon but I want to have quick ranging capability. I know if you consider the MOA size of your red dot as a ranging tool, you can get mighty close though.

  16. Almost all RDS sights are parallax corrected for 50m, bring that in to 7-30m and this same test gives VASTLY different results. At CQB/Home Defense distances(inside 15M) you can get 8in of error from a standard RDS sight while getting less than 2in from an HWS.

  17. Can't tell if this review is by Christopher Walken or Norm MacDonald… Great video overall but why test for parallax shift without recording which shots on each target were from which eye position, or using different targets for different eye positions?
