We tackle the question…Should I buy a designated training AR in .22lr or convert my .223/5.56 into a .22lr with a conversion kit? Well, that’s exactly what we tried to figure out. Honestly…we just wanted to have a little fun with some inexpensive alternatives to shooting $.60 per round.
So we set ran out to Hyatt Sporting Clays and set up our Ironhorse T.O.R. with a CMMG conversion kit and picked up a Smith and Wesson M&P 15-22 and hit the range.
The CMMG kit runs around $200 and includes the BCG and 3, 30 round magazines.
The 15-22 runs around $375 ($450 with Vortex Spark Red Dot) and comes with 1, 25 round magazine.
Each have their plusses, each has their deficits, but in the end, it’s up to you to decide what’s best for you. For us, we’re happy to say we have both options.

I have an AR15-M22 and have not had any jamming issues. I use CCI ammo.
I'd be curious to see how both setups run with mini mags or stingers.
Any reliability issues with any 22 is so often quality of ammo. My new pistol is picky.
