After learning the cartesian plane, hearing x originally as the vertical with the y as the horizontal when they're synonymous with the opposite is difficult to hear and imagine without seeing the hand signals. While the fundamentals are valuable, the labels, when already universally known, helps with more efficient transfer of information.
