Smith & Wesson M&P15 Tactical II: Welcome to the 21st Century

In this episode of TFBTV, Hop takes a look at the new Smith & Wesson M&P15 Tactical II. This is the first S&W AR to fully adopt the changes in the civilian AR market of the last 20 years. S&W is slow to change, but this rifle represents a strong endorsement of the modern 16″ mid-length gas, medium profile barrel setup. This is a very versatile rifle, but given the price point it might be a little bit lacking out of the box.

  1. Hard no for me. If these were $500-$600 then fine, but $1400? No chance.

I bought a Daniel Defense SOCOM upper with RIS rail on brownells for $800, put together an aero lower with a solid parts kit and stock for another $250.

  2. This is aimed at people in LE who have to abide by a approved list. Everyone wanted a rail system and a mid length gas system but it never came from the factory from S&W until now. Factor in the handguard, charging handle, and BUIS. The "upgrade" is a no-brainer for those people who need to abide by a roster and they're probably rocking sport 2's.

That being said, this isn't a good deal for just anyone. Only makes sense for LE really.

Street price will probably be just over or at $1k. Distributor pricing looks like $900~

  3. Does anyone know who makes a symmetric USGI-style short-lever ambi safety like on this rifle? S&W doesn't seem to offer it.

As for the gun itself, yeah… looks like a cludge of parts in a fairly standard config. Yawn.

  4. My mind still hasn’t changed m&p sport still better deal. $699-799 vs this I’m cool with the “old school” configuration as you say lol all black ar15 popular easy to find caliber shit I’m cool with that in my opinion 😎

  5. Sad times for canadian ar owners /they have been locked in our house because there banned here now /the hammer is coming down for a forced manatory "buyback" is coming /we are still fighting it thru o r pro gun groups but are running out of options /sad sad days indeed /

  6. All of these… BCA to Nights to Sig… I don't get it. All mill spec aluminum. Same same same. Just kinda boring. All utilitarian, same thing. You can pay for a milled name on the side I guess.

  7. I like the M&P 15 Sport II. I bought mine for less than 1/2 of the T2 MSRP. Maybe Hop's right about police buyers, but I rather buy a base model and spend the savings on my own upgrades.
