Best Suppressor for the AR-15? [.223 versus .308 Cans]

In this episode of TFBTV filmed at Silencer Co in Salt Lake City, James Reeves and Austin R. from The Firearm Blog go to Silencer Co’s lab to answer the question: “Which silencer do I get for my AR-15? A .223 or a .308 can?” This is a difficult question because .308 cans are more versatile and can be used with more calibers including .300 Blackout. On the other hand, .223 cans are lighter, smaller, and usually less expensive. In this video, we have a blind panel compare the sound from each without knowing which is which, and asking what they think about .223 versus .308 cans. After the guys give their opinions, we hook the AR-15 up to a sound meter to see which one is actually quieter. The results may surprise you.

  1. Would love to see this done with Dead Air when they get there 556 can out. Especially because you can put a 556 end cap on a 30 cal can.

  2. Now I'm curious about how much stronger buffer springs and heavier buffers reduce port noise and increase muzzle noise with the silencer held constant. I would assume slower unlocking lets more pressure out the muzzle but how much difference does it really make?

  3. Great video but wish you had included the 36M since it has an even larger bore diameter so would be interesting how it compares side by side with the 5.56 and 7.62 cans. I like running a 7.62 can on 5.56 because it's often hard to get perfect alignment with the bore rod on the 5.56 cans. The larger 7.62 bore gives some reassurance when the bore rod is not centered.

  4. Why are they 1000+ dollars please explain that to me. Not including the adapters you want more people in the suppressor game. Bring down the cost of everything you need people don’t want to wait. Granted that’s not the manufacture fault however it’s part of the process. 1000+ for the can another 200+ for the Adapter to mount it to your firearm. Then another 200 for government wait your not done yet you have to wait 6 months to a year.
