Are you looking for the best EDC flashlight? Me too! Let’s review the Streamlight Protac 2L-X
I’m looking for the best EDC items. Today I will review this flashlight for Lighting, Battery, Build, Size, and Price
Let’s start off with lighting.
This camera at night does not do these flashlights justice. The surrounding areas are much brighter than what you can see here.
The high setting comes in at 500 lumens while the low is at 40 lumens
Here is the Streamlight pointing at the garage from 50 feet away on the high setting.
For comparison here it is also in split screen showing the Streamlight with 500 lumens on the left and a 1200 lumens flashlight on the right side at 50 feet
and comparing them again with the same flashlights at 100 feet.
Then a couple shots of a 250 lumen flashlight at 50 feet and also at 100 feet.
Next I will show the flashlights at the same time next to each other. Focusing on the garage door on our right.
Then inside the garage I’ll show the same three flashlights again.
Inside the flashlight beams all look pretty similar
Here is the Lumintop 250 inside at 15 feet to the corner
Then the Streamlight 500
Followed by the Wuben 1200
Here you can see the 500 on left and 1200 on the right together
Since it is rated as a 500 lumens, you can see it does settle between the 250 and the 1200 fine.
So, I’d give Lighting a 9 out of 10
Let’s talk about the battery
There are several options depending on whether you get the 18650 rechargeable battery or the CR123A batteries.
Here is the USB port for charging the battery
With the 18650 rechargeable battery at 500 lumens it is supposed to last 3 hours 15 minutes, and at 40 lumens should last 30 hours
I have this on the counter charging every few of days, so have not had any problems with it running out yet.
You have to take battery out to recharge it which is a little inconvenient
There are some batteries in this 500 lumens category that you can charge without taking the battery out.
And some of these make it even more convenient with a docking station
You can buy Streamlight specific rechargeable batteries with he USB port. I will leave a link in the description
Because you have to take the battery out and there is not a docking station I will give battery an 8 out of 10
Build
There is a lot to like in the toughness and build of this flashlight.
The recessed end cap makes it harder with the gloves on, but it also prevents accidentally turning it on or off.
And It also protects the rubber end cap from getting torn accidentally
The knurling feels good. Not tough. No where near the roughness of barbell knurling, but decent enough if wet.
The Anti-roll face-cap may come in handy at some point
No wobble, No battery wobble while shaking maybe while out jogging at night with it.
It comes with a holster, so while not part of the build it should be mentioned there is one
Here is a picture of it attached to a back pack strap
And another picture of it attached similar to a M.O.L.L.E. attachment
It has a Removable pocket clip which allows you to wear it bezel up or bezel down
And this clip can also be used as a Hat clip
Apparently, it is IPX7 Waterproof up to 1 Meter for 30 minutes
And 2 meters impact resistant
I’m going to give this a slight hit on the score for not being able to turn on or off with gloves on.
So, I’m going to give Build an 8 out of 10
This has a great feel for an EDC flashlight that fits well in a backpack and occasionally in pockets.
And it Feels great in my hand as well
Biggest point of this flashlight is the bezel
I measured the bezel at just under 1 inch, and with the clip installed the widest part was just over an inch. The length it just a little over 5 inches.
For an EDC 2, meaning I would carry this everyday in my backpack, it is great.
And, occasionally if in my pocket as an EDC 1 is great too.
So, I will give size a 10 out of 10
This is a nice flashlight. I haven’t had it long enough to know how durable it is. For example, I don’t know how long the rubber end cap will last. There are a LOT of flashlights that are similar in build size with more lumen output AND with a rechargeable battery for a lot less money. Are they as reliable as the Streamlight? Not sure yet. I’m going to give price a 7 out of 10 as there are many others out there that appear to be a better deal.
So that tallies up to a Total score of 42 out of 50
Hope you like it. This was a challenging video to make. Lots of research on flashlights. Hard to shoot nighttime footage. Then figuring out how to get footage side by side.
