This is without a doubt the highest value duty grade/high performance holographic optic on the market from a top tier manufacturer.

You can find the Eotech 512 from several different distributors for around or under $400 brand new. on the used market you should be able to find one for around $300 in great shape.

I own 2 of them and I paid $300 or less for each of them. currently I’m about 6000 rounds deep between the two optics. the black one was manufactured in 2011 and the FDE one was built in 2017 and I haven’t had an issue with either.

let me know what you think of building the highest value duty grade rifle you can, including optics and lights for about $1500

  1. L3/ Eotech is kick ass! My buddy had a 512 on his Patrol Rifle & the center glass broke free & was rattling around sandwiched between the outer & inner layers of glass. He just gave it to me. I contacted L3 or Eotech for warranty info. This optic was purchased in 2010, it's 2020 almost 2021 now & they said ship it & they would repair for free! Just got it back & they surprised the crap out of me, new glass, new batteries, new almost everything! Thanks L3/ Eotech

  2. Are there any cheaper holographic options on the market? I have a red dot but with my horrible eye sight it’s just a red blur . And I’m not a tactical guy nor do I train that much. I get too the range maybe 2 times a month if I’m lucky even less now with ammo how it is. So I just can’t justify spending 600 on an optic.

  3. Comparing this to a standard red dot, do you notice a significant difference in being able to "look past" the dot and focus on the target without your eye focusing back on the reticle?

  4. What riser are you using to bring it up to 1/3. I have a X95 I'm thinking of putting one of these on, but lower 1/3 is more like an absolute on that gun, so I need to raise it up.

  5. Love the Call of Duty/Act of Valor FPS shooter’s view! Also still loving the Cinerama Dome aspect ratio – “You…shall not…PASS!” Brilliant!

Great review of what seems to be a very forgotten product. Even by me, and I have one. Well, it’s an Oct 2011 517.651, but who’s keeping score? It seems to me the 517 was the LE version and I think the only difference might be NV settings below “1”. I got it on a great Black Friday sale (might have already been discontinued?) and I still remember thinking that it would be the only RDS I’d ever have because they were so damn expensive. I had to dismount it just now from my 300 BLK pistol to get the manufacturing date.

“I have no memory of this place.” Can’t remember if it had auto shut-off and a quick look in the very cool box reveals no owner’s manual. And it’s like the 517 never existed at the EOTech website so no downloadable manual. I’ve left mine on to check.

This thing is a tank. Everything you said about it is absolutely correct. And, with my version of astigmatism, it’s the only red dot I have that I can see clearly. Nothing else I can add except that for a home defense weapon, most likely deployed in the dark, the weakness is having to turn it on. And it turns on at solar-flare-brightness level “12”. Not the best idea to have to fumble around in the dark after being awakened by someone bashing in the front door. I have to admit that I have switched to Sig Romeo 5’s for everything with a red dot due to the Motac “auto on/auto off” capability. It wakes up at the previously set light level and at a great weight savings. Much as I love this EOTech I just can’t ignore these features.

Now, it would be spectacular in a situation where it functioned more as a “duty gun”, where you know trouble is coming and you have a moment to turn it on and set it up so it will find new life on some other rifle that doesn’t already have an LPVO on it. And, in that respect, you are absolutely correct; there is probably nothing better (Sorry, Aimpoint fans!).

  6. Note to anyone looking on the used market – be aware of Chinese knockoffs, they usually have red and green but the "red only" variants are near impossible to tell the difference between, that is until they break…
