  1. I had a couple of double feeds myself. Mostly from my error of checking to see if I had one chambered and next I know there's that double feed lol. Me being new to my AR, lesson learned. Still nice to know that I'm capable to lock that bolt back and remove my clip on my own. I always asked for someone help.

  2. gunsite is the most irrelevant 'school' out there today. they use antiquated approaches and perpetuate misconceptions. it's just a bunch of good ole boys sitting around with no relevant skill or knowledge. it has continued to exist only because it's in a retirement city and all the similarly ignorant old people keep giving them their money for basically poor instruction.

  3. When I took a carbine class, what we did was everything up to the point of taking the mag out. We instead of sticking our fingers in, we cycled the bcg a couple of times before reloading and putting one in the chamber.

  4. The quickest, safest and best way I've seen/experienced to clear a double feed or a mess up there is to do a chamber check, mag flip, cock the action twice with the non dominant hand, hold the action back then do a second chamber check just to make sure it's cleared, let the action go forward, load a fresh mag and hit that charging handle back to chamber a new round. So far, in my military career that was always able to clear malfunctions in around 3 seconds.

  5. An overly engineered AR that causes the jammed during combat? Game over. This guy is so funny and too proud to admit ammo jammed is common issue of AR rifle.

  6. A couple things missed here… A) he did not cant/tilt the weapon the the side to observe the chamber to see what the problem was… granted i know that they knew it was a double feed but that is just something they should've done to prevent any training scars. B) Fingering the magazine well is only accepted under two conditions: combat and also if racking the charging handle to the rear doesn't drop the brass/clear the stoppage. If he had observed the chamber after pulling the charging handle, he would've seen that the stoppage had cleared and that fingering the chamber was completely unnecessary.

FINGERING the chamber is NOT to CHECK if the chamber is clear.. your EYES can do that. (unless it is a low light situation which is the ONLY time i would) Fingering the chamber is to try to finger out the stoppage that REMAINS after your EYES have confirmed that the stoppage has not been cleared.

    1) Tilt the weapon and observe the chamber (double feed)
    2) Mag release (most likely wont fall out easily), strip mag, rack rack rack charging handle.
    3) Observe again… if it has cleared. Load a NEW mag and chamber a new round. If not, proceed to step 4
    4) Lock charging handle to rear and attempt to finger the chamber (scary i know but in combat you wouldnt think twice) If you clear it, load a NEW mag and chamber a new round. If stoppage is crazy stuck and still doesnt clear, proceed to step 5
    5) Pull and keep the charging handle to the rear with your hand and hit the butt of the stock on the ground hard. Repeat until the brass comes out. Then load a NEW mag and chamber a round. Sight and attempt to fire.
    6) If you have not cleared it by now… God wants you to die and you're screwed. lol

This is strictly from a combat/tactical standpoint. NOT target shooting.

  7. Many commenters here speaking of the dangers of placing fingers in front of the open bolt. Yes, there is a risk involved. However, Gunsite doesn't teach target shooting; with a few exceptions, Gunsite teaches techniques, tactics, and strategies involved in using a firearm to fight for your life; as they themselves state during classes, they teach gunfighting, not shooting. When time is of the essence and your life is on the line, risk the finger chomp and perform the task as described here. I'd rather a finger pinch (or crush) than a bullet finding me. For target shooting and other recreational firearm usage, by all means protect those fingers!

  8. Well, it is now Sept 2016.

Note: California’s new law dictates that a magazine must be fixed in a manner that the magazine can only be removed once the upper assembly is disengaged from the firing mechanism. If the magazine is not fixed in such a manner Californians must registered their guns as “Assault Rifles.”

I decided to get a jump on the new California law. By adding an ARMaglock to my Colt CAR – A3 HBAR Elite, which makes the magazine fixed, I do not have to register my weapon as an Assault rifle (the magazine is fixed and meets the new law).

I found out, at the range today, that a double feed is a major issue with this set up.

The magazine will only come out when the rear take-down pin is pulled and the upper is disengaged from the lower.

Here is the problem with double feed. The rear rear take-down pin can be pulled out but the upper receiver will not swivel because the bolt is partially in the buffer assembly. The magazine will not release until the upper receiver is swiveled up away from the lower. The chambered round will not fall out either, if the bolt is moved forward a second double feed will occur.

I had a range master help me. We had to lock the bolt back, then carefully run a bore rod down the front of the barrel and push out the live round!

Maybe I will need to carry a dental pick and try pulling the chambered round out if this happens again.

I will only have to put up with this nonsense till next year. TEXAS here I come!

  9. try this one. weapon malfunctions. see malfunction "double feed". grab mag, remove mag. with mag in hand rack 1,2,3. insert mag. rack and bang. eliminate all unnecessary movements. and be the one that puts their fingers into a chamber with the bolt to the rear and u will be the one to donate some blood.

  10. Never stick your fingers into an open bolt, very very dumb. Accidents can always happen and you might end up clearing a your fingers instead of the double feed. Seesh, Fail instructor

  11. They forgot a really important step: LOOK IN THE FRICKIN RIFLE TO SEE WHATS WRONG. Its not a mystery, you can see what happened through the ejection port. No need to guess the problem and finger your mag well…

  12. We need more people like you in the UK, My dads father got his firearms taken from him and burned in the 50's, ones that was passed down through generations and I have being in a country that strips us of firearms and rights.

I've always had a firm interest in firearms since I was young and I only recently got too fire one while I was over in Canada and it was the best time I've ever had.

  13. @jonindenver agreed, but as a "midst of combat" type fix it should address a majority of problems that you'd encounter. If clearing the excess rounds and racking 3 times doesn't get the gun clear and ready to go, something is probably broken and there is nothing that is field expedient that can do done to fix it.

  14. Usually when you have a double feed problem, wouldn't you have a live round in the chamber and another jammed up behind it? Your system didn't really address ensuring the chamber is clear before loading the new mag.

  15. @kargo27
good question, for casual shooting you can use the same method and take your time and look into the receiver to verify the clear worked.
however this is a good drill to know, I will take a burn over binging disarmed in a threatening situation any day. 🙂
