I have a much higher quality video discussing scope zoom comparisons at long range with no music and better audio and less shaky footage here, please watch if you don’t like the quality of this video – Scope Zoom Compared at 1 mile, 1,000 and 500 Yards!

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to look at a target at 1,000 Yards? It seems so small and far away how could anyone even see it? Well luckily we have some excellent optics available these days but the question is, How much Zoom will I need? It is a great question and I get asked all the time how much I use when going beyond 1,000 Yards and the truth is I really don’t need that much. One thing to keep in mind is zooming in does not make the picture clearer, you can just see the objects easier. I set some targets at 500 Yards and demonstrate different levels of zoom at that distance with the vortex Viper PST 6-24 then we back out to 1,000 Yards to take a look at some really far, small targets. The equivalent of a 1.4” circle at 100 Yards the 14” plates at 1,000 seem impossible to see let alone hit the target! But the biggest reason I run high magnification scopes is to better spot dust trace from bullet impacts that far out. Any questions feel free to ask!

  1. I used a cheap 3-9×42 scope on my hunting rifle. I was running into problems at 400 meters… Turns out the glass didn't let enough light through the scope. I bought a Swarovski X5I 5-25×56 and I am absolutely in love with it, mounted it on my Accuracy International.

  2. I learned. The magnification help to see the small print. I used to shoot with a nightforce 5-20×56.
    I swap it for a nightforce 3-10×42.
Best 'down-scale' scope I never thought I'll say. Quality of the lens helps. If I knew what I know now. I'll pick a fixed scope anytime. Nightforce don't do fixed as far as I know. Pick what's comfortable. You're buying it😁

  3. With my Savage 10 .308 I only shoot out to about 875 but could do 1000 on a silhouette sized target. I run a fixed 10x SWFA SS. For the money I had to spend at the time I decided its best to have better quality glass and tracking than higher variable power ability; no regrets at all. If you practice with what you have you'll get good at it- the key. Btw…I've also got 20/15 vision so that helps.

  4. This demonstrates why most once a year hunters are really pushing it, just to get that deer out at 200 yards! And I've never recommended them streaching it past that!
Only a few riflemen have both the training and or recent experience (practice) to go much farther.

  5. I really didn't understand how little zoom you needed until I took my 6-24X50 out to the range for the first time and could see my hits at 500 yards perfectly fine. Anybody that watched that video and was underwhelmed by the lower magnification, seeing it on video is only about 1/3 as zoomed as it is in real life since the lens takes up way more of your vision than your computer or phone screen does.

  6. I shoot a 6.5 creedmore target rifle with a 10×60 NV.
I have found that if your serious about long range target shooting
from 100 to 1800 yrds. the right equipment is a must. The zoom on the NV is important to see your hits and adjust your retical. Also finding the right bullet weaither heavy or light works best for you.
The wind and weather make a big difference too.
Its a great sport but xan get expensive.
I have a variety of bullets weightsfrom 95 gns to 160
But the powder is the same weight for all. 43 gns IMR.
    windy = heavy bullet
    140 – 160 gn
Mild wind = mid range 130-140 gn
    No wind = 95 to 123 gn

  7. Great video. With age comes the shaking too. Even a tiny amount of your hands shaking makes it hard to keep steady. Maybe if I could lob a grenade downrange it would even the odds.
