It’s going to be a busy day in Indianapolis on Friday.

President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence are scheduled to appear at the National Rifle Association convention in downtown Indianapolis, which is expected to bring an estimated 80,000 attendees over the course of four days.

Both Trump and Pence will speak to NRA members on Friday at the NRA Institute for Legislative Action Leadership Forum. The event begins at 11 a.m., and takes place at Lucas Oil Stadium in downtown Indianapolis.

This means travelers and commuters should be aware of road closures and potential snarls in traffic as the president and vice president make their way to and from the stadium from Indianapolis International Airport.

While exact arrival times and routes cannot be shared, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department and Downtown Indy Inc. have divulged some information that should be helpful to drivers.

Highway closures

There’s expected to be closures on I-70 between I-465 and downtown Indianapolis. Traffic going eastbound will be diverted to I-465, while westbound traffic will be redirected to I-65, the IMPD said.

According to the IMPD, access to the airport will be uninterrupted, but drivers who need to get on I-70 west to get to the airport terminal should do so via I-465. The most likely delays on I-70 will occur between 10 to 11:30 a.m. eastbound, and 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. westbound.

Missouri Street from I-70 to South Street, and McCarty Street from Capitol Avenue to Missouri Street, will be closed when President Trump arrives at the airport until he leaves Lucas Oil Stadium.

Temporary closures might occur downtown until about 6:30 p.m. while Pence remains in town, said the IMPD.
