We’re unsure what to say of this platform. Does it make sense to put a 1-8x scope on a 10.5in barrel shorty AR15? How much does a scope do to help a handicapped shooting platform?

Shot with IMI 55grain 5.56 ball ammo.

Parameters: 2x shots per target from 150y to 500y, segmented per 50 yds.

Shopping with this link costs you nothing, but provides us with equipment:

Distance Conversion:
150y – 137m
200y – 182m
250y – 229m
300y – 274m
350y – 320m
400y – 366m
450y – 411m
500y – 457m

  1. If you couldn't tell from our immediate confused and flabbergasted reaction, the results of this run were…unexpected…we had taken one of the firearm/ammo combinations we anticipated would struggle, and instead put up one of the best runs for the course…But as we discussed in our analysis, there were two main factors at play here:

    1) The wind was at an all time low for us on this course. You are used to seeing us shoot in 15-20mph winds with even stronger gusts, and on this day, we were floating between 3-5mph.

    2) This is one of the few "Service Rifle Standards" firearms we've outfitted with an optic which utilizes a graduated fine aiming reticle. Now, obviously the magnification allowed us better visibility, but the real value was in the reticle itself – and we DID dope this firearm to gather data on where to hold, opposed to using our standard method of battle zero holds/iron sight marking adjustments.
Quick Note – Josh did call this the "Mil-R" reticle in his debrief…that is inaccurate, it is simply the NX8 Mil Reticle.

We will be testing additional short barrel platforms in various chamberings and with various sighting systems in the future.

  2. You have a slight but important misunderstanding… The projectile may not have enough energy to push a steel target substantially beyond 250-300 yards, but this is not what the short weapon is designed for… As you can see even out to 500 yards you can make good hits on a pretty small target, and therefore can make an adversary bleed… Punching holes in people doesn't take a lot of energy, so don't be fooled that the platform is beyond it's usefulness. It has and will continue to drop bad guys around the globe at these extended distances if a person applies good fundamentals, plus it's way handier for those closer engagements…

  3. What up with the ballistics from 10.5 beyond 300? Depending on ammo type at what range will they both (hollowpoint and ball) result in just punching a clean hole in a body like a 22 LR without expansion or fragmentation? Or do the rounds begin to keyhole?

  4. Enter the sHoRt BaRrElS aIn'T aCcUrAte crowd… They may lack in terminal energy, but the short barrels can still put together some impressive groupings when assembled properly and matched with good ammo…I love my little 10.5"–but I know its limits…

  5. I am a huge fan of 10.5 pistol/SBR configuration. I have multiple 5.56 10.5 rigs as well as a 300 BLK 10.5" rig. Only difference is any of my rigs at best only have a red dot or irons, im not running any magnified optics on less than 16" gun. Id like to see this with a non magnified red dot or at best a 3x magbifier combo with a reddot. A little more real world setup applicable to someone like me. Thanks for the great videos.

  6. Josh and Henry, this is a great video because you tested common “thinking” and showed what that barrel length is actually capable of in ideal conditions with standard ammo and a modern optic. Yes, maybe not a lot of terminal energy past 200, BUT I will be damned if I am going to stand around getting fired upon at 500 by that rifle, especially if you are launching follow up shots every couple seconds. With todays fine optics and ammunition, you can do a lot with a shorter barrel. And if I had to get in and out of a car with my rifle all day, I know I would appreciate saving those 5”. I wonder what your Ft/Lbs of energy were at 500; probably like a handgun bullet fired at close range? Kickin’ ass fellas.

  7. Great video and shooting. Unexpected results indeed from this platform. I'd like to see a simliar analysis out of a Yugo M92 PAP pistol or equivalent. This is a true CQB weapon or PDW. Great work gents and love your channel.
