Team Sootch AR-15 Build Part 3: Final Assembly (Pin-and-Welded Brake)

Finally, the assembly of my wife’s rifle is complete. After literally months of wasted time with the ATF – thanks for the complex and cash-grabbing system for law-abiding citizens to line your pockets so you can then try to grab more rights and cash from us – the build is done. And I think it turned out better than originally planned sans ATF. I don’t see what the big deal is about SBRs anyway. They’re loud, kick harder, and are less reliable overall. The 14.5″ DD barrel with pinned-and-welded Lantac Dragon muzzle brake (OAL 16″) with a mid-length gas system will arguably provide my wife many, many years of reliable and comfortable shooting…

This AR-15 chambered in 5.56 NATO (will shoot both 5.56 and .223) is based on the Palmetta State Armory “Team Sootch” laser-engraved lower receiver paired with the PSA upper. The parts don’t match quite well, and with the sub-par quality of PSA parts we received for this build (several were replaced and are still sub-par quality), I won’t likely recommend PSA at this stage in time. My Spike’s Tactical upper and lower receivers are leaps and bounds better than PSA. You’d think they’d mate perfectly, being the same company, but no, they aren’t, and there’s noticeable wobble between the PSA upper and lower. Doesn’t impede function, but the wobble is noticeable to me (hopefully not to the Mrs…

But as disappointing as that is, Rainier Arms came through with a beautiful pin-and-weld job on the muzzle brake and barrel to make it NFA compliant without the need for an SBR tax stamp. The rifle is 1.5″ shorter than mine OAL, which will be perfect for my slightly shorter wife. She’s strong, but wanted to make sure we were saving as much weight as possible. We ended up getting the lightweight profile DD barrel, which is considerably lighter than the government profile equivalent. She doesn’t have a free-float handguard like the BCM KMR, but the Magpul MOE handguards will work just fine. I think she’ll get surprisingly decent to good accuracy because it’s a Daniel Defense barrel. We’re breaking it in soon so stay tuned for more action!

  1. But if you pinned and welded the comp then your barrel length should be 16" and you shouldn't need ATF permission…. Am I missing something on this build?
If you have ATF permission then why would you need to Pin and Weld the comp?

  2. I know they take getting used to but a x98 is a way of having a short looking rifle with the correct length weapon. yes a ar15 looks sweet with as a sbr and Daniel are amongst the best. thanks for sharing .may peace follow you as long as you carry your rights properly.

  3. 70 ft-lbs of torque! Yikes… Be sure to do the conversion for a torque wrench with an attachment that adds length to the overall wrench system.

Your barrel wrench adds 3 or 4 inches and that probably implies 10 or 15 more ft-lbs. Just FYI.
