I do some shooting with the Trijicon VCOG 1-6x first focal plane
scope, discuss it’s features, and what I think of it overall vs some competitive options like the Vortex Razor 1-6x II-E.

  1. Never understood lowering magnification to reduce wobble. Your ability/lack-of to hold steady is still there at the lower power, you just can't see it any longer. With that logic, 6 MOA red dot and I'm on target at 3000 yards all day 😀 Jokes aside; thanks so much for this excellent review. It's so nice to see details before a large purchase.

  2. Great review. You have to love the ruggedness and durability of the Trijicon ACOG and VCOG lines. I may be putting the VCOG with the mil reticle on my FN Scar 17s. Just a note, unlike the ACOG, the VCOG does not contain Schott Glass. Schott Glass scope lenses are produced in Germany. There are no US companies that actual produce lenses seen in rifle scopes, spotting scopes, etc… The lenses are purchased from Japan or Germany, rarely, and assembled in the US. The VCOG has very high quality glass produced in Japan, similar to the glass used by US Optics and the Vortex HD line. The glass in the VCOG is better than Trijicons Accupoint and Accupower lines, although probably manufactured in the same facility. The glass in the VCOG has apochromatic lens aka "high density" aka "high definition." Other than that great review. Keep them coming!

  3. Just a word of thanks and by way of follow up…I have been on the fence about the VCOG for quite a while but your review pushed me over the edge and I could not be happier. I got one from Optic Planet and used the discount code you suggested. It came into today and I put it on my KAC SR-15. I opted for the "circle" reticle, which I figured would be "good enough" for CQB use, but I love the hash for more precise shooting at 600-800. Weight? Yes, no getting around it. But you did a great job pointing out all the great features. Considering it comes with a mount, and runs on a AA battery and have a much better reticle experience than an ACOG I'm really happy. And…at lowest setting it is awesome. At 6X the optics are amazing. Folks just have to experience it to understand it.

And finally….the eye relief. Holy cow!

    Fantastic.

    Full 4"

  4. Could you do a review of the Schmidt & Bender Short Dot 1-8x? It's apparently got some kind of techno wizardry to make it a true 1X and I'd love to hear your thoughts on it.

  5. I really don’t understand the logic in a first focal plane 1-6x. Anything requiring holdovers will be at 6x anyway. In competition I’ve never seen a need for it under 6x so why compromise the reticle. I like first focal plane for higher magnification optics but it seems silly here. I’d be sold if they made a second focal plane version.

  6. so in SHTF, would an ACOG w/ a fiber optic rmr be a better all around optic because its constantly illuminated? Or despite the battery life, this is the best all around optic even for cqb. Planning out my next AR build, debating which one to go with

  7. I'm on the fence between this and the nightforce nx8. Price is similar and i would think durability would be close. But the nightforce has the 2x advantage.

  8. I purchased a Primary Arms ACOG with the ACSS reticle and I tell you, I'd be VERY tempted to go VCOG if it had the ACSS reticle. What really appeals to me about the VCOG as you point out in your review is the eye relief, but an optic that weighs over two pounds is quite a lot to lug around. I can definitely see how this is an awesome tool for the guys who require it in combat, etc.

  9. Love the VCOG. If I ever have the 2k or less to spend on an optic for an all around ar, this is it. Built like a tank and trijicon glass is legendary. BTW sweet rifle it's riding on too

  10. What's the weight with the Geissele mount? Trijicon lists the VCOG at 23.2 oz without the mount, can you confirm? Do you know of any other good mount options?

I agree with many other commenters. I'd like to see it with an ACSS.

  11. Nice review and looks like a great optic. However I personally will never pay that kind of coin for an optic. I wish I could but I just can't. Most expensive optic I have (because of your review) is the Stenier p4xi and it's phenomenal imo for what it is and was under $500.
