  1. The AR is my "Go-To" rifle at the moment, but if someone could improve on the way the AK mag goes into the mag well, meaning, making it more of an enhanced/easier/smoother magazine insert, I would definitely dump the AR and switch to the AK. Don't care how much one practices, once in a while there's going to be some difficulty inserting the AK mag. Well, there's this and the bolt not holding open after mag dump, oh and it needs a better placement option for a comfortable, reliable and practical sight and accessories local. I know it sounds like a lot, but someday this will ALL be problems of the past. When these chages take place, the AK will be the number ONE battle rifle in the entire World, no doubt about it.

  2. I bought my first AR, a Colt Sportster, in 1983 that cost me a bit less then $300.  Since then I have put somewhere between 75,000 and 100,000 rounds through it with no problems.  The only things I changed on it were the butt ugly triangular fore grip and the pistol grip.  And I only changed the pistol grip to get one with the storage for some spare parts,  Those spare parts still sit in the grip and the sealed bag has never been opened.  I still shoot minute of angle groups and the only problems I've ever encountered revolved around old military issue magazines.  And I clean the rife every time I shoot it, a habit I got into while in Viet Nam.  I've been offered big bucks for my Colt many times, and I have refused then, every time.

  3. Sootch: This is why I watch your channel, cause can you always learn something important that you can use later!👍 Thanks buddy for all your hard work cause it really is appreciated!

  4. Yeah, I agree they have worked out most of the bugs related to the AR15. The only one that I don't think the have totally worked out is the fact that it is only a .22 cal. Now the the AR10 is a good version. 🙂

  5. Seriously, I really want to know, under what conditions is the magazine release button going to crack? I mean, that part is under very little stress, and the lower receiver has a "ridge" that helps protect it.

  6. +sootch00 get rid of those blue extractor buffers. They are obsolete today and have been superseded by the black buffers. I recommend using the Colt SP64026 extractor spring assembly, available from Brownells.

  7. Actual military use you mainly just go through
    Front sight posts.
    Bolt Gas rings.
The E-clip that hold the hinge of the dust cover in place.
Springs in the trigger wearing out (but usually just never been cleaned and sticking)
A lot of this is a bit excessive for the individual.

  8. Sootch00 , Hi pal. I watch all your uploads, so I obviously enjoy your content. I would like to give one piece of constructive criticism. The intro to the videos is a bit long for watching in a short time frame i.e. a work break etc. by all means though, it's your creative choice, just a friendly suggestion. I do however enjoy the outro w/outakes and watch if I have the time. Thanks for this video, I need to purchase backup AR parts ASAP

  9. Upgrade the buffer spring to a Tubbs flat wire. Upgrade the charging handle to a Gunfighter or Talon (keep the stock one for the long term SHTF home kit. Headspace a new bolt to the barrel. Make sure you have a staked BCG from a good company. You are pretty much GTG for any field repairs you want to do. I have yet to see a firing pin break, but ya, you can toss one of those in there too. Anything more than that really isn't a field repair. For a SHTF long term kit, another bolt, a lower parts kit, and a gas tube is a pretty good idea. This isn't that expensive an investment. What will be a little more expensive and should be discussed is what tools to have available. A pin punch kit and small hammer, a Magpul Bev block, a Magpul armorer's wrench (absolutely blows away the older wrenches), and a bench vise are minimum. I would also add a few gunsmith bench blocks (pucks), and roll pin holder and nipple punches to make life easier. Some would say you need a torque wrench, but you honestly can get by without one if you have any basic mechanical skills.

  10. Ah yes…repair, spare, and up grade parts. They always transform themselves into budget demolishing new guns! On the bright side, pulling a bcg out of another rifle before heading out isn't exactly a time consuming headache. Check this one off as asset instead of asslost.

  11. With WROL their will be a lot of spare parts on the battle field !  Also if you upgrade a part save the factory part for a spare !  And two or three of your main weapon…  Or you group or club use the same weapon; an AR Club !  Thank you for the video !  tjl

  12. Sootch the M4 carbine that you are showing at 6:04 has a major problem. The disconnector is loose front to rear which it should not be – you should only be able to compress the tail (spring) end of the disconnector and with a lot more force than tapping on it (think using the ball point of an ink pen will damage the ball point end). I would ASAP pull it apart and make sure that the disconnector spring is installed correctly with the large end down and compare to a known good or new spring. Also something may be jammed in the trigger – disconnector channel such as a primer cup or anvil causing this problem.

Note that this can cause hammer follow (hopefully resulting in mushy trigger instead of FA while the trigger is depressed!) and is the common cause to firing when releasing/resetting the trigger as known as double firing. This would be a good video to show how to troubleshoot and change out the spring.
