Politician Wants A Mental Health Exam To Keep Your AR-15

Dan Osborn is running for U.S. Senate in Nebraska, and his new “common sense” gun proposal should worry every gun owner.

He wants people who own so-called “assault-style” rifles — AR-15s, M16s, AKs, and anything he decides fits that category — to take a mental health exam every five years and re-register their guns just to keep what they already legally own.

But here’s the part that makes the entire proposal fall apart.

The shooting he keeps using to justify it was committed with a shotgun.

Not an AR-15. Not an AK. Not an M16. A shotgun.

So his plan wouldn’t have stopped the very tragedy he’s using to sell it.

That’s not policy. That’s emotion dressed up as “common sense.”

And it gets worse. Osborn says he checked with law enforcement and one gun owner who supposedly had no issue with the idea. One guy. A sample size of one. Meanwhile, the Nebraska Firearm Owners Association — with over 26,000 members — called the proposal an attack on individual liberty.

Because a right you have to renew every five years isn’t a right.

It’s a subscription.

And the government can cancel a subscription.

Today it’s AR-15s.

Tomorrow it’s shotguns.

Then five years becomes three.

Then the exam changes.

Then the people deciding whether you’re “mentally fit” to keep your rifle are the same people who never wanted you to have it in the first place.

This is how gun control works: pick the scary word, ignore the facts, call it common sense, and make law-abiding gun owners beg permission to keep what they already own.

  1. Restrictions for all or none of my constitutional rights.
Will there be a mental health examination to get an internet presence?
To air your grievances to the government?
    To get an attorney?
To be secure in your papers and property?
    To vote?
To be innocent until proven guilty?
    To get married and divorced?
    To have children?
    To travel between states?
    To get a job?
    To join a church?
Until these concerns are addressed the answer is a resounding NO!!!!

  2. Not to mention slow-walking the mental exams so they are hard to schedule … leading to permission lapses and "start the whole processes over again from the beginning…."

  3. Mental health is always the problem … what are they doing to help the mental category?
The police can't arrest someone until they commit a crime.
So why not let the people defend themselves instead of being allowed to defend your family.
This is so stupid it hurts.
"Trust me … I work for the government"

  4. If a bill like this ever gets introduced then amend it with the law to also apply to anyone using social media, the internet or AI since they are all used to commit violent crimes more then an AR!5. Expose their hypocrisy. Make them show it’s about control and not safety.

  5. The saddest part is he is going to require that mental.helth exam be done by someone certified y the government and you know they are only.going to certify anti gun people to make that assesment. Ill say that again but slowly. The people that will be determining if your mental helth is acceptable are going to be people.that think owning guns is a sign of poor mental.helth.

  6. I certainly agree with the statements guys like this need to also pass health exams. In fact, a politican should be required to demonstrate financial competance and a knowledge of our founding principles. These skills seem to be quite rare among our congress critters. (US National Debt: $39,254,335,000,000.00 and counting higher … one can hardly copy this number it's increasing so fast!)

  7. How about we have our Congress and our senators and our Mayors and our judges take one of these tests to see if they're incompetent leaders for a state's countries and or towns. Because most of them have no common sense

  8. Mental health exam, now how often do you hear after someone takes there own life, "they were such a happy person" or "nobody could imagine that". Mental health exams can be faked by the people who are the worse off. Look at veteran suicide rates? They all pass there Mental health exams

  9. When you need permission to exercise a RIGHT, it's not a RIGHT, but a Privilege that can be taken anytime.
It's past time for "We the people" to stop asking permission to own firearms; it's time we just get what we want and tell the politicians to go KICK ROCKS with their illegal, unconstitutional laws. Ya, that's what I thought. No one has the will to do so today. We are all done with freedom, but ready to lose it.
Until we, as a people, are ready to take back our country, we are all subject to laws that infringe on our rights.

  10. Common Sense would be any politician proposing anything like this is automatically unable to run for office!! That's common sense! Or if they don't like that they're welcome to come show me how bad they are so they can get there on the spot Darwin Award!
