What is PRK?
Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK) is a laser eye surgery that corrects refractive errors like nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hypermetropia), and astigmatism. It reshapes the cornea, allowing light to focus properly on the retina for clear vision.
At Shroff Eye Centre, we offer Streamlight PRK, an advanced form of PRK which uses only the Wavelight excimer laser (aka “contoura laser”) to remove the top layer of the cornea and correct its shape.
Streamlight has some advantages over conventional PRK:
Faster recovery: Streamlight PRK uses a laser beam instead of chemical to remove the epithelium- which results in less tissue removal and faster healing.
Reduced risk of haze: Streamlight PRK has a lower risk of corneal haze compared to conventional PRK.
Commonly Asked Questions:
🔹Is PRK safe? PRK is a safe and effective procedure with a high success rate.
🔹Does PRK hurt? During the procedure we use anesthetic eye drops so you feel no or minimal discomfort during the procedure.
🔹How long does PRK recovery take? Most people achieve clear vision within a few weeks, but full healing can take some more time. You may experience some discomfort after the procedure for a few days till the epithelium heals- but this is usually well tolerated by most people.
🔹What is the cost of PRK and cost of Streamlight PRK? Please call us to know more!
Advantages of PRK over LASIK:
🔹No corneal flap: PRK doesn’t create a corneal flap like lasik, reducing the risk of complications.
🔹Suitable for thin corneas: PRK is a good option for people with thin corneas who may not be candidates for SILK or LASIK.
🔹Long-lasting results: PRK can provide long-lasting vision correction with stable cornea.
Disadvantages of PRK:
🔹Longer recovery time: PRK has a longer recovery time than LASIK or SILK.
🔹More discomfort: You may experience more discomfort after PRK than LASIK or SILK.
🔹Higher risk of haze: There is a higher risk of corneal haze after PRK.
