In this video I discuss my experience with budget AR15s and why they’ve made me largely forget about high end models.

I pieced my 16" together. Its technically a PSA. BCM stock, lower parts kit, midwest rail, magpul furniture. The lower shell is a Anderson. The suppressor is YHM and so on. Its been nothing but reliable and accurate. Never had any issue with it. No jamming or anything. And i know its put together correctly, if shtf, i would have no worries grabbing it. 💯
I SWEAR that everyone on the tacticalgear subreddit is either a company rep or a secret "rolex operator" (someone with a lot of money that pretends theyre working class or completely omits the fact that money isn't a concern).
What's insane to me about that subreddit, but also a lot of places on the internet dealing with this topic, is that the loudest people in that subreddit try and make ME seem crazy for pointing out that insanity of spending $400 on a pair of NYCO pants from Crye or UF. If you're TRULY working vcass, how can you justify thst expense in any way?
Or the people that, with literally ZERO objective testing, blanketly condemn every product made in China as bad…. please, please explain to me how a pair of hundred dollar Emerson Gear combat pants, literally constructed out of genuine, USA manufactured multicam NYCO fabric are any different than the Crye one's? This is how you know the people on that subreddit aren't working class, they have this ridiculous belief that domestic manufacturing has this almost magical quality to it that makesnit inherently superior …..
I ACTUALLY work in American manufacturing and let me tell you that underpaid Americans are just as willing to cut corners as underpaid chinese workers. Just like America, China has high quality brands and budget brands, and in my experience, the high quality brands Chinese brands make products of equal quality.
Oh, and another reason why Im convinced everyone on that subreddit are compamy reps os their obsession with NIR compliant fabrics…. if you're in a scenario where someone is hunting you with night vision and theyre close enough for your fabric lacking NIR compliance to give you away, they probably would have heard you first…. its just a ridiculous thing tonbe concerned with….
Basically, guntibeand the larger tactical gear community has devolved into this shame machine where it basically tries to shame everyone who hasnt spent $2000+ on a rifle, $300+ on a plate carrier (always with uber expensive Hesco plates), $1000 on an optic, etc….
Oh, and Im seriously just tired of the Night Vision/Thermal videos…..who are those videos even for? Its reported that 80% of Americans cant afford a $400 emergency, so whats the deal with all the night vision videos?
Or is this "hobby" packed with more "rolex operators " tuan I even thought?
Let’s be real, for the amount of “hard use” and “training” your average gun owner is going to put their gear through in any given year, outfitting them with a Ruger AR556 and a Ruger RXM is going to be sufficient for 90% of them. No shade being thrown, just reality. Personally I prefer the mid tier AR’s in the $1200 – $1800 range, so ADM, BCM, Colt, Daniel Defense, and Sons Of Liberty Gun Works, but realistically they are more than what I need qualitatively.
Bought Del ton pre covid for around $550. Ran about 5k rounds bolt messed up and the barrel shot out. Bought a BCM BCG has been great for 10k plus rounds. I changed the ejector spring because it seemed weak at it was broken but kept running. Shot out my BA barrel at 6kish and now have a stainless steel barrel from noveske should have gotten CHF but it is what it is have around 4k rounds so far down range. BCG and barrel are important
They say they wont go to war with certain builds because they wont go to war at all in war you use what you got
You can get a BCM blem complete upper, along with a PSA Sabre lower that comes with b5 stock, radian safety, and a 2 stage trigger for about a $1,000.
100%
Really, even putting an emphasis on shooting a rifle is not as important as pistol
Though proven rifles make the most sense because they are war proven, You could be the best shooter and battle hardened and still be taken out by novice in SHTF situation with an AT polymer 556. Just the luck of the draw. Never under estimate
I think lots of folks forget, Ar platform is what 60 some years old now?
Machining has come a long way, as has QC.
PSA is garbage 🗑️
I’m an old Gen X geezer. At 60, I’m too young to be a boomer and though I hunt, I’m no Fudd either.
I was late to the AR game. I had a Colt National Match, from 1989-2006, when I started training classes. It was a target rifle – not much good for training. My first carbine/pistol course with Dave Harrington, I was the only one rocking an M1A Scout, an HK USP45 and an Arktis rig.
That all changed quickly. I’m a working class dude, so I built my first M4-gery piece by piece – all LMT. Back then, during the days of ‘The Chart’ at M4 Carbines, (IYKYK), Colt, LMT, Noveske, BCM etc were considered top-tier. Times have changed a bit since then.
I’ve put together a lot of rifles over the last 20-years. I’ve always believed in using the best parts I could afford. Building them a part or two at a time, paycheck to paycheck, has taught me a lot. I know they’ve become a meme now, but back in the day, my 13.7 Noveske, with the flaming pig, just dripped quality. In a lineup of AR’s on the firing line, or leaning in a rack before a class – it stood out.
The last rifle I built – about a year before my spinal cancer diagnosis, was the cheapest rifle I’ve built, but in my mind, it’s among the best. Not just because it was the truly last rifle I’ll ever build, (the cancer damaged nerves in my spine and subsequently, my right side is noticeably weaker – including loss of fine motor skills in my right hand.
It’s the best, because I still used quality parts and those are easier to find than ever and don’t have to have Knights, Daniel Defense, Geissele, etc parts to be quality, as it’s done throughout the price points (more or less).
My buddy and I got a too good to pass up deal on two FDE KE Arms polymer lowers. The WWSD, thing was taking off and we decided to build our own versions of it. No way was I going to buy carbon fiber rails and I don’t like pencil barrels as a rule, so I don’t even use the ‘WWSD’ moniker for it (I found it sort of weird anyway).
What I wound up with however, is the most super lightweight, super reliable, soft shooting and stupidly accurate rifle I’ve ever built, (my buddy says I hit the barrel lottery) and he may be right.
I ran the pants off of it for nearly a year, before I got too sick to do much more than meander and gun, let alone run and gun and they figured out why. I put a Primary Arms Gen III SLX 3x on deck and an SMS Trinity at 3pm. I’d trust this, or any of the half dozen rifles I’ve built and the couple dozen I’ve helped friends with.
You don’t have to spend a months pay to get a decent rifle anymore and if you want ‘top-tier’, you don’t have to go into debt to get it. Build it – one part, one paycheck at a time. But, no matter what you do, for gods sake, take it from a busted up (but in remission) geezer: train, train, train.
Apologies for the ramble – but it’s, well guns and I’m bored.
Most rifles…Radical Arms….Palmetto…Smith and Wesson….Ruger…..all shoot better than the people using them. Been handling them since army infantry training in 1983….l wil take pretty much any bargain rifle and use it with confidence. I used M16A1 rifles in places like the DMZ in Korea….work just fine. These bargain guns….work just fine
Subbed for your honest opinion
I recommend buying two ARs good quality identical one you train on and the other for when shit’s about to get ugly
My first AR was an American Tactical 556 . 4 years later and probably over 2000 rounds through it and I have yet to have a single malfunction.
Avoid PSA if you gonna depend your life on it , it’s just about going bang every time if it will fail eventually by design lol
What’s considered a high end AR15 ? It’s the core components ie parts internally mainly quality control the BCG is the heart of the AR15 if it’s QC is shit then you’re whole entire gun is shit
Got a Ruger 556 last year and it runs better than the Colt m16's that I carried in the 70's, 80's and 90's while in the US Army..
PSA ar 15's are all I have and have Very Little problems with them.
I can build and set up 3 PSA's for 1 Daniel Defense would cost.
And I truly believe none of us are going to "Go to War".
Probably just somewhat urban/gorilla combat at the most, and I have 100% confidence in my PSA's and I'd Much Rather have "3" instead of "1".
For as much as a civilian actually uses there rifle a mid level gun will suffice for any type of firearm.
I love my PSA’s just as much as my DDM4 or my Bushmaster……. All have a place!
I agree with your mindset, although I'd add a thorough vetting with atleast 500 rounds to weed out issues that more likely than not will have. Spare bolt and small springs and parts on standby too.
The things to buy is metalurgy, heat treatment, and tolerances.
I'm glad you are happy with the PSAs. I've had them quit. Friends have had them quit. People online have had them quit.
Colt, FN, and BCM are the point where you get the necessary quality for the best money.
I wanted a ddm4 until I got to shoot it back to back with my bca barreled 600ish build. My cheap legos may not have the longevity of the dd, but it does everything the dd can just as accurately.
I can't stand the whole "break-in period" for high end guns. Somehow that justifies a gun not working out of the box, especially when you paid around $1k! I can understand the idea that a gun will work smooth and real nice after a few hundred rounds, but again, that does not excuse a high end gun from not even functioning at its most basic level.
The best Rifle, is the one I'm given.
I mean, can't beat the price of, Free.99…
Keep killin it bro!
You’re doing great so keep that head up!!
Thank you for the info!!
Respect & Amen!!!
