The Senate Judiciary Committee conducted a lengthy public hearing on over a dozen gun bills last night. NRA was asked and accepted an invitation as the only pro-Second Amendment group to participate on an “expert” panel of witnesses to open the public hearing. The Senate Committee, like the House Committee last week, held the bills for further study, which is a common procedural move. These bills remain active and can be moved by leadership with little notice.
There has been a great deal of testimony and debate on nearly two dozen gun bills that remain active. The two most consequential bills are:
S.2611 expands civil liability for members of the firearms industry in contravention of federal protections afforded under the 2005 Protection in Lawful Commerce in Arms Act (PLCAA). S.2611 is designed to bankrupt anyone in the firearms industry. It goes well beyond manufacturers and openly flouts federal law and protection from frivolous litigation.
S.2710 adds possession to last year’s semi-auto gun ban. There is no grandfathering, and the legislation creates a felony with harsh penalties. Those who fail to get rid of their guns face a maximum penalty of $10,000 and a 10-year prison sentence.
Thank you to the hundreds of gun owners who went to the Statehouse during the last two weeks and contacted their lawmakers. Our job is far from finished! Gun owners need to sustain the pressure. Your immediate assistance is needed! Please contact your Senator and Representative and respectfully request a NO vote on all gun control bills.
