Rhode Island gun owners will have the weekend to catch their breath before the next assault on Second Amendment rights in the Ocean State. As we reported earlier this week, the House Judiciary Committee held a hearing on 17 bills. Next Tuesday, April 14, the Senate Judiciary Committee will convene upon rise of the Senate to begin a public hearing on many of the same bad ideas.
The committee will consider over a dozen gun bills. While there are some pro-gun bills on the agenda, gun banners in control at the Statehouse will never advance these. Rather, the package they are pushing is focused on diminishing rights.
Topping the list of dangerous bills are:
S.2295 adopts a gun rationing scheme where government permission is only given to buy one gun a month.
S.2710 adds possession to last year’s semi-auto gun ban. There is no grandfathering, and the legislation creates a felony with harsh penalties. Those who fail to get rid of their guns face a maximum penalty of $10,000 and a 10-year prison sentence.
S.2726 requires mandatory training to purchase a firearm. This is nothing more than a costly and time-consuming barrier to those who may have an urgent self-defense need. NRA certainly supports training, but it should not be a government mandate in order to exercise one’s constitutional right.
