In this video we take a deep dive into my budget tactical AR-15 build based on a Palmetto State Armory 10.5″ platform and see just how capable a well-built budget rifle can actually be.
The goal of this build wasn’t to throw the cheapest parts possible on a rifle — it was to create a high-value tactical setup using proven budget-friendly components that shooters can realistically afford and replicate.
We break down the entire rifle build piece by piece and explain why each upgrade was chosen, from the internal components to the optic and accessories.
After the build breakdown, we take the rifle out to the range and run it through several practical rifle drills that I typically use for training, including:
• Draw-to-fire drills
• Bill drills
• Mozambique drills
• Movement drills
• Target transitions
To make things even more interesting, we also run this PSA budget build side-by-side against my SIG MCX Virtus, a rifle that costs nearly three times as much, to see how the performance actually compares.
This rifle is equipped with:
• SIG Romeo 5 red dot with riser
• SomoGear PEQ-15 laser/illuminator
• Streamlight HLX weapon light
• CMMG 36K suppressor
• Upgraded bolt carrier group, trigger, and buffer system’
Throughout the entire test the rifle ran 100% reliably with zero malfunctions, proving that with the right parts selection you can build a very capable tactical rifle without spending thousands of dollars.
If you’re looking to build a budget tactical AR-15 setup or want to know what upgrades actually matter, this video will walk you through the entire process and show how this PSA build performs on the range.

Yessir I have a nice rifle or three but I'd rather not use it as a trunk gun. Plus they get heavy with all the nv crap and it's nice to have a basic plastic fantastic to throw in the trunk and not worry as much about car being broken into as I would with my geissele 11.5 or mk12 or 300 blk. I can even qd the suppressor and tuck it in the hidden compartment so an nfa item isn't at as much risk of being stolen. Btw I like the idea of mounting my lam father back from the gas block so I don't cook it as much. Any issues with running the laser further back like that… shining your hands or rifle/ components
I noticed you staying locked into the rifle while waiting in the low ready, why not focus more on target and practice naturally bringing rifle/finding the dot?
What would you estimate your overall cost to buy including all your upgrades to the PSA?
If you really put 2k rounds through that rifle I'd be interested to see the feed ramps and the rest of the internal anodizing in the upper.
the vortex sparc is extremely durable, just upgrade your mount.
I like the setup, it’s practical and looks good.
What brace is that? SBa4 or what?
Sorry to have to break it to the " tier 2.8" garage operators"with mini vans and delusions- the budget guns are " just as good" for 90% of users.( its why they sell so fast and have low malfunction reports)
At the draw down to the GWOT , manufactures and suppliers had surplus mil spec barrels, lowers and bcgs , and even " civilian market" companies with trained employees and gunsmiths can turn out AR-15s
PSA kicks butt for the money ( and yes i own a Colt, Spikes Tactical, BCM , Daniels defense- and recently an IWI Zion for comparison!!)
Id be more worried about barrel life for stupid laws preventing replacement. It's pretty optimistic to think one would need more than a 500 round barrel life in shtf if you're avoiding conflict. If you're not, still optimistic for other reasons.
Props for saying ambidextrous correctly and not adding a vowel
I own an 11.5 PSA just switch out the internals BCG barrel buffer you’re already winning with that shell run 🏃♂️
I think overall every build is unique to the builder. Also if SHTF shoot your rifle less is the better option.
I have multiple PSA uppers with aero lowers, aero lower parts kit, upgraded BCG, radian raptor charging handle, 45selector Geissele 3gun/ SSA-E/ Geissele Brownells 2stage triggers. Geissele buffer and spring, BCM grips
Can you explain your reasoning for mounting your laser so far back? I'd think when you c clamp your rail that you'd block your laser and illuminator with your thumb.
Cool video.
Sweet build Sir..
I didn't catch what type of iron's are you running?
My Radical Firearms RF-15 is my baby, $450, accurate and reliable.
What is a lifetime supply of ammunition? Twenty rounds and all you can scavenge out of dead men's ammo pouches.
Awesome video
Love my PSAs. I have 3 currently and 5000 rds + through mine collectively
