Welcome back to The Southern Draw! Today we’re taking a detailed look at the CMMG 036 suppressor from CMMG’s Zero (duty / hard-use) line—a .36-caliber “do-it-all” can built to run across multiple hosts without breaking the bank.
In this review we focus on real-world sound and tone first, then dive into mounting, included accessories, and the specs that matter if you’re shopping for your first (or only) suppressor.
What we tested
We ran the CMMG 036 across multiple calibers and hosts:
9mm (subsonic + supersonic) — surprisingly quiet with a deep tone
5.56 — impressive performance for a .36 bore “universal” suppressor
300 Blackout (mostly subs) — very comparable to dedicated .30 cal cans, with minor first-round pop on some loads
6.5 Grendel — great for hunting-style strings (a few rounds without ear-ringing)
We also talk about why “hearing safe” in the real world often means: can you fire 1–2 rounds (like hunting) without your ears getting hammered, even if you still wear ear pro for extended range sessions.
Biggest value highlights
One of the standout features: you get TWO direct-thread mounts in the box:
1/2×28 (common for 5.56 and many 9mm PCC setups)
5/8×24 (common for .30 cal hosts like 300 BLK / 308 / 6.5 Grendel)
That’s a big deal because a lot of suppressors ship with nothing you can immediately mount and shoot. Here, you’re ready to run it on most threaded hosts right away.
Mounting + design notes
Hub compatible (flexible mounting ecosystem)
3/8″ drive front cap makes torquing and mount swaps way easier
Built for hard use with a durable finish that’s cleaning-friendly
We’re also rolling this can into upcoming head-to-head tests against dedicated suppressors (like a dedicated 5.56 can and a dedicated .30 cal can) to see where the “universal” approach wins—and where it gives up ground.
If you’re looking for a single suppressor to cover multiple calibers while you build out your collection later, the CMMG 036 is a strong contender based on our early testing. Drop your questions below and tell us what hosts you’d run it on.
