NRA-ILA | Minnesota: Governor Walz Issues Two Gun Control Executive Orders

With the holiday season upon us, former VP candidate Governor Tim Walz has once again proven his “Bah Humbug” stance on the Second Amendment.

On Tuesday, December 16th, Governor Walz issued two executive orders regarding gun control. Since Governor Walz never received the special session he threatened earlier this year, he decided to put law-abiding gun owners on his own personal “naughty list.”

The first executive order creates an “educational” campaign to promote the state’s “red flag” laws, mandatory storage scheme, and directs the Department of Commerce to collect data from insurance companies on the “costs of gun violence.” The stated goal of the order is to increase public awareness, address “underutilization” of red flag orders, and to ensure the “efficient and equitable implementation” of the orders. We can assure you, there is nothing “equitable” about stripping an individual’s Right to Bear Arms without stringent due process, though it certainly is an “efficient” means of firearm confiscation.

The second order creates a Statewide Safety Council with a stated goal of preventing “mass violence, targeted attacks, and domestic terrorism.” Noticeably absent from the list of Council members is a seat for a representative of Second Amendment advocacy groups.

These latest executive orders are a starting point on Governor Walz’ goal of dismantling the Second Amendment. It’s critical that NRA members and Second Amendment supporters stay engaged as the 2026 legislative session is rapidly approaching.
