Quick Tip: The Difference Between Nitrided & Chrome-Lined Barrels

Scenario: You’re picking out a barrel for your new AR-15 rifle build. You discover you have a choice between a chrome-lined or a nitrided barrel. So which is better? Brownells Firearm Support Technician Caleb Savant sorts it out for us. Both finishes provide excellent corrosion protection, reduced bore wear, and extended barrel life. Chrome lining is the older process and is better suited to full-auto and high-volume semi-auto fire because it provides higher heat and friction resistance. Nitriding, also called Melonite and QPQ, is easier to apply, which helps keep barrel price down. Depending on the type of shooting you plan to do with your new Dream Gun™, either one will give you excellent service.

  1. My old Bushmaster 16 inch HBAR is parkerized chrome lined and has always shot less than 1/4 MOA no matter what ammo it’s fed. It’s at least 15 years old with several thousand rounds and I rarely clean it. Just my experience with barrels.

  2. Qpq is molecularly harder than chrome and if polished before the qpq process can be more accurate and last way longer than a chorme lined barrel. Its honestly the best process/barrel treatment available on the market.

  3. Then there’s BLAZE(R) from B4C Technologies… makes nitriding and hard chrome obsolete. 106 HRC, 33% to 45% coefficient of friction reduction, does not affect geometry, 152 microns deep, non-brittle nor spalling possibilities, extremely high heat resistance limited only by the substrate itself, extremely high corrosion resistance, environmentally safe … any questions?

  4. Russian Molot chromium they use is amazing stuff because they use the same plant where they make RPK machine guns, i have had at least 22k rounds of 7n6 because at one point in time it was 11cents a round so been running them like crazy through my 5.45 22" vepr and she still shoots like the day i bought it. Hammer forging and chrome works the best, especially if you have a thicker barrel. I have shot out my adams arms nitrated barrel about 7k rounds it lost accuracy but that is still good enough. I also replaced it with the same vodoo barrel type because now do the ammo prices I won't be doing ay rapid fire so the barrel should last at least triple the amount… On the AR platform the best longest lasting barrels have to be the FN chrome forged barrels. Chromium is some of the best stuff for barrels, for AKs i've also been happy with American made green mountain barrels they also have deep nice chromium.
