On Wednesday, May 14th, the Senate Judiciary Committee held a lengthy hearing on S.359, a sweeping semi-auto ban falsely dubbed an “assault weapons ban.” If passed, this legislation would ban scores of commonly owned rifles, handguns, and shotguns in the Ocean State.
The House held a hearing on their version, H.5436, earlier this session. Both bills have been “held for further study,” a procedural move that keeps them alive until leadership decides to bring them forward. Because this legislation remains very much alive and viable, it is imperative that Rhode Island gun owners continue contacting their lawmakers. This legislation would restrict the manufacture, sale, purchase, and possession of commonly owned semi-automatic firearms in Rhode Island. The broad ban even includes shotguns with fixed magazines holding more than six rounds as “assault weapons.” That means, under this ill-conceived and unconstitutional bill, a snow goose hunting shotgun could be considered contraband.
Despite claims by the gun control community, this legislation would have no impact on public safety. While it would disarm law-abiding citizens, criminals—who, by definition, do not follow the law—will continue to obtain and possess semi-automatic firearms illegally in Rhode Island.
