John Lovell attends Warrior Poet Society’s Mid-Range Marksmen course and comes home with empty mags, a happy heart and a handful of extremely valuable shooting tips.
Warrior Poet Society Mid-Range Marksman is a 2 day course built around teaching how to exploit the mid-range capabilities (100-600 yards) of the AR platform. Taught by a US Special Forces Sniper Instructor, we are going to take your rifle work to the next level and help you capitalize on the AR’s inherent accuracy with maximum effectiveness. Topics include rifle setup, basic ballistics, positional shooting, and an intro to wind reading. In this course you will become capable of stretching the legs on your AR platform out to 600 yards with reliability and confidence; a critical stepping stone for those looking to get into Extreme Long Range Marksmanship (ELR) course offerings of 1000yds +…

Purely anecdotal here, but if you're really into shooting or hunting and have subpar or poor eyesight, I think the best optic purchase you can make is lasik surgery. It has made my shooting experience infinitely more enjoyable and has helped in all situations whether I'm behind my rifle optic, spotting with a scope or binos or my naked eyes.
Where’s Evan?
Couple notes: When mounting scopes, it's inch pounds, not foot pounds. Instead of a bag to squeeze, I just use my off hand, (left usually, but right if I'm shooting left handed. ) it works just fine as an elevation device.
Love these tutorial vids
I suggest Mr. Lovett and the Special Forces Sniper Instructor visit Camp Pendleton for one of the team shoots the USMC holds every year. They will see hundreds of Marines with M1 Garands, open sights, shooting "possibles", 10 for 10 bullseyes at 18" targets at 1000 yards (915 meters). Then come back and apologize to your viewers for trying to sell them all this crap. The viewers are only a phone call away from learning this is all a scam. Semper Fi!
How is it you are just figuring this stuff out??? You must like riding the struggle bus!
Welcome to the endless money pit of long range precision shooting
1:35 Aura can’t save me after how many times I’ve been in the news …
The final tip was big. Very good, gentlemen.
Man I sure enjoyed this video, its like the old school videos I enjoyed years ago from WPS. Don't get me wrong the newer content is solid, this was just a nice change of pace.
Good to see this video. Almost everything you are talking about I already do, with one exception. I went from 5.56/77gn to 6mm ARC with 110gn Sierra Match BTHP, Vortex 3×15-44 mrad scope. I hand load all my rounds and shoot -.5 moa consistently. I use a temp stable power. This is not my only long-range rifle but it is the only gas gun I've used that will give my bolt guns a run for there money. I keep my dope on the inside of the rear flip lens cover. A Kestrel, although not a must, is worth the money. I use a 2500 yard hand held rangefinder because it will do 1500yards fast and with no problems. When you get into mid to long-range shooting you end up becoming a half assed physicist!
Need to get to a pistol and rifle course you guys teach. Been wanting it for years but there’s always something that gets in my way. Mainly the courses here in GA (I live here too, John) are filled up before I see the dates when added.
Another great video guys! I’m in need of an outdoor range for exactly what this video is about……distance shooting with my rifles. Any help in an hours drive of Walton County, GA will be appreciated.
5.56 can kill up to 800m
I can shoot super far.
Aim at 45 degree angle. Ain’t shooting any farther than that.
When discussing torque
Tools for mounting he kinda messed up there your tools will be in
(In-lbs) NOT I repeat NOT!!! (Ft-Lbs) 40 Ft lbs you WILL BE CRUSHING STUFF.
(In-Lbs) is what you need
Fellow sniper here, thanks for the video; two points:
1. You are damn right about the spotter – mine is the master chief gunner and he is asking me not to use turrets corrections, instead, go for XX elevation and X wind calculated in the scope’s reticle. He is always on point.
2. I was surprised to understand about the shadow – assuming that’s the vignette inside the scope – on a longer distance with a normal 6-24x FFP that would give you inaccurate shooting picture, so will have to dive into this topic.
Hey John, loved the video and this would make a great series! You would likely find your prone shooting improve with a higher quality bipod as well. Switching to an atlas bipod after using Harris and Magpul bipods is a night and day difference.
do you have issues with your rifle stand? I tried selling those at my store, and its been the most returns for breaking legs off when the extendable clamps are. I thought people were just being carless, but I have personally gone through two myself now, just using them for photography for our Gunbroker account.
I trained to shoot, grew up shooting. listened to those around me who proved to me they could shoot. So I started with a 30-06, Savage 110, a.270 Win. Remington 700. I went through a few guns to find the right ones, both of these will put 5 shots in a dime at 200 yards. I wish I had this course then. I would take it now but I have a health condition that makes me shake. Thanks for the video. I'm still training my grandchildren. I learned a few things I did not know. Thanks again. You help more than you know. Like your preaching too.
Only about 7-10k worth of gear!
John, can you give me some in person lessons? Been wanting to get better. I’m in central Ky and don’t have a place for anything over 200yds. I wanna come shoot with you guys. Wanting to get into longer range precision but would also love to learn shooting rifle and pistol as well from a pro.
What kind of tripod is that?
Do you sell the cap you are wearing. I couldn't find it on the warrior poet supply co site? Its pretty dope
Spot on info John!
That Vortex spotting scope? You can get a mil or MOA reticle for it Im fairly certain. Be worth checking into for ya anyway.
My best long range shooting was a rock solid scope /stock, excellent ammo ….but most of all was my mentor on a spotting scope and his coaching. His observation and experience was priceless.
Laser range finders emit a LOT of IR light. Be aware if using one you will show up like a lighthouse to anyone with NV.
I definitely need this course my AR with me behind it is currently capable of high precision shots up to 120 yards. Maybe 150 on a good day.
Is that the Huxwrx suppressor?
Are we allowed to ask what jacket he’s wearing?
Very interesting video. You are a great teacher. I would ask for clarification on a couple things. You said pounds and I believe you were referring to inch pounds when it comes to mounting scopes and bases?
I thought you learned these same things when you worked with Ryan Cleckner?
Great Video John
Been shooting at distance a long time and this video is a great cheat sheet. Your instructor is
100%
Cheers!!
WIll the mid-range course be added to the online courses?
Awesome video.
I have those same bino’s. Amazing! You can see the future with that bad boy!
Learning great job
Who makes that pleated jacket???
Great information. Is there a stand alone video on the tool being featured in this video
It truly was a very special course and was a great time sharing the range with you and the rest of the team. a.I.ing for Josh is teaching me to make much better wind calls and begin to understand this stuff even better. As we say….it’s a journey.
Seems like you just added to your journey John!
Cant wait to jump on these classes !
What's the best barrel for long range? Bottom budget to mid-range budget?
Comment to help the algorithm
I'm comfortable with 200m with open sights …. Just like Uncle Suga taught me in qualifying every 6 months. For 20+ years, Qualified expert every time.
My rifles now have 1-8×28 LVPO optics.
John, if you have the same spotting scope as me, vortex makes replacement eyepieces with mildot and the tree.
I think I now know why I just buy "medium" socks. And good shooting mats.
