Or get a barrel slightly oversized, dip it in liquid nitrogen to shrink it, drop it into the upper & when it cools it expand into a full press fit you won't even need a barrel nut.
This is the second video you can find using the shim method to install barrels. Find the shim that makes it impossible to push the barrel in by hand and then use thermo fit to finish the job. The barrel isn’t going to go anywhere
I did this on my last AR-10 build… Except I used bronze, and punched a 1/4" hole for the centering pin so I could butt the edges together on the opposite side with no seam.
I turn my shim 180 degrees so the gap is away from the index pin. Then I use a one hole punch to cut a half moon notch out of the shim. I feel like it keeps the shim from wiggling around as much when I thermo fit the barrel.
Sometimes it helps to put the shim on a smooth surface and lightly tap out any little ridges you made when cutting the edges of the shim or that you made when cutting the notch.
I only build for myself or family, so I don't mind taking the time to shim and/or thermo fit every barrel. It probably doesn't make a difference for all rifles, it just makes me feel like I gave it 100% effort.
Bcm uppers with faxon firearms barrels. Need to heat the upper to get the barrel to start and dead blow to the back of the upper to get the barrel seated.

Can you do a video on Upper Receiver lapping?
I've only shimmed a barrel nut for timing, never knew about these for the barrel extension for fitment. I learned something new today
What about thermal fitting barrel to receiver ? I thought that did away with bedding and shims ?
So if the fit is already tight as hell with no perceivable wiggle, then you don’t need to use any of this?
Thank you
Do you recommend lapping the upper for an accurized AR? If so, how do you do it? What tools do you use?

Aluminum foil?
Green locktite

What makes people think that boxers cannot learn jujitsu as defense
Thank you Chad for expanding your thoughts on shims.
I have done 3 that way that were too loose. Only thing I had was aluminum foil. Hope it doesn't oxidize over time.
I'm curious as to why you wouldn't want your self defense rifle to have the best fit possible? Honest question

Chad – “It can cut you.”
Me – *flashback
BCM thermal fit uppers are $80, they raised the price but well worth it compared to what aero charges

So…aluminum foil FTW 😂
Is there any reason as to why you shouldn't use this method in a bedside gun?
