  1. This video is 30 minutes long and it felt like 5 minutes! Nice one! After watching many of your videos I decided to stick with Nikon and replace my old (but still reliable) Coolpix P510 with a D5600 (because all the Z-mount cameras are just too expensive for me in Brazil). I got the D5600 with a 18-55mm kit lens and a 50mm f/1.8 FX lens. I must say I enjoy every photo I take with it and I am glad I am still a Nikon user. Next up is a telephoto zoom.

  2. Great video, it’s like a dose of reality after all the Sony biased, Nikon bashing, crap seen online these past 2 or 3 years. Even though I don’t intend to move to Nikon mirrorless for a few years, your recent vids make me enthusiastic and hopeful about what the future of Z-mount holds. Don’t stop doing what you’re doing! This is by far the best Nikon flavoured channel right now 👍

  3. Not one camera manufacturer makes the perfect camera. In my view Z6 is a match or R6 and Z7 a match for R6. AF tracking might not be perfect but probably will be the mark ii’s. Take into account how much cheaper Nikon Z6/7 is in comparison to R6/5 and in my view a far superior lens line up at this moment Nikon gets my vote. Sony is a different animal, why did I not go for Sony? 1 – The ergonomics of Nikon Z cameras are infinitely better , 2 – Sony lenses are huge

  4. Thanks again Matt for your reply regarding the average file size on the Z 7II
    (between 50 & 60 Mb)
I asked another question to which I now have the answer, regarding compatibility
of CF Express and XQD cards.. I now see that the new models will let you use either
    CF Express OR XQD cards….. ……Cheers ….Alan

  5. Hi, Matt, great analysis of Nikon and camera market! The way I see it is that Nikon has always been at the top of the camera industry. They have always given us quality products . In 1980 I purchased the EM and series E prime lenses. These products were well made and good performers. Critics at that time trashed them as well as Nikon for making them. They were wrong then and they’re Wrong now!! I’ve been a Nikon owner ever since and have not been disappointed. Sony is what it is, an aggressive consumer electronics company and it shows in the design of there cameras!! But they do make a mean VCR !! 🤣🤣📸 ✌🏼❤️

  6. I really love Nikon and would like to upgrade to mirrorless but because of competition my D850 resale value is low. The D850 is a great camera so not sure if I should hang on and wait until I can afford a mirrorless. I’m new and don’t have much lenses but would love a lighter camera with specs like D850

  7. Whow. Absolutely one of your best videos.
You read the article with a positive mind, whereas others read it with a negative mind.
Guess people see what they want to see.

NB: Don't like your new transitions. Thought my graphics card was dying on me…

  8. please no flip-out screen 🙂 – for street-photography I like the screen as it is, for taking picture like on a Hasselblad Waist Level Finder (what I must confess never did). The only problem is the too sensitive eye-detector.

  9. Agreed Matt! I've hired sony people for my wedding videos and tell you what, the files that come out are less than impressive. But influencers on youtube don't care because they truly do not understand good quality. On the other hand, files out of a Nikon are on a whole different level but all these self-proclaimed 'film-makers' online talk trash about it just because it cannot keep up with the AF in Sony or Canon. AF is never used in 'film' work anyway. It's only used for weddings and vlogging. And these new bunch of wannabe professional video/photo (graphers) all just go to sony because their favorite influencer said others are crap. It's this blind trust that has not just monopolized the market but also brought down the quality of content a lot. Sure, we have fancy lighting and sexy camera moves around now with all the new accessories coming up but the main part of 'film-making' (because they call themselves film-makers) or photography and videography in general is to tell a story and these guys absolutely suck at it because they are caught up in spec battles that don't really have any meaning in the real world. But the truth is those guys that shoot on pro level and live in a long term relationship with their equipment don't really need youtube to make money or don't even have the time to make youtube content. And the irony is that it's those guys that don't really work that much in the real world, who have time to research and create content, edit and upload, are the ones that are judging equipment that is made for someone who doesn't have the time to do all that crap and is always engulfed in their work.

  10. Matt, I enjoyed the fireside chat – well done. I come from the computer tech world as a customer, a VAR, and manufacture. As a customer, I would always have to tell he sells rep, I'm only interested in these features (always under five features). As long as they get it right with these features, I don't care about the others. They may be nice to have and I may eventually exploit them but for the purchase, prove to me these features I mentioned are solid. The features could be coming, half baked, vapor – I don't care as they will not influence my purchase decisions. The same with cameras. Eye autofocus is a great example. It is not a make or break feature of my use case. Is it a great feature – absolutely but it doesn't affect my buying decision.

Many other aspects of your chat I like and agree with. LOL, not sure that is a good or bad thing.

  11. Hi Matt
Maybe slightly off topic but I own an OMD EM 1-Mk2, Fuji X-T3, Panasonic G9 and Nikon Z 50 with both kit lenses + Z50 1.8 full frame lens. Maybe I am a camera junkie but I've been trying to rationalise my collection down to maybe 1 or 2 systems. Everytime, I pick up any one of these cameras I think this is my camera of choice but No! Every one has its own attributes that I want and not one can cover everything I would like. I would not trade any one of them at the moment. I'm totally enthusiastic about the proposed Nikon Z 6 II but I'm sure it will still be a compromise for individual needs. What exciting times!
    Best Regards and great channel.

  12. Sony, "C19"; what about Fuji, who may displace both Sony and Nikon? The first digital SLRs were APS sized sensor equipped because that's what was available. Full frame was adopted because of all the 35mm system lenses out there. With the Z system, finally abandoning the F-mount, Nikon should have adopted the largest available sensor.

  13. Thanks. I have not gone mirrorless yet because A) the D850 is a fantastic camera. B) I trust Nikon to wait to release solid, well built, professional cameras that will take the abuse of professionals in the wild. I suspect that when the Z9 comes out it will be up to the pinnacle of quality the the D850 is and perhaps surpass it but in a mirrorless body. When they came out with the Z mount I figured they were planning for the future and the ability to provide image quality that the smaller mounts can't. I'm so looking forward to holding a Z9, and if they came out with a small medium sensor camera like fugi that too would be welcome.

  14. Really great deep-dive on this topic Matt, thanks. Re: Flip-out screen – I think the perfect model for this feature is the Z50, and they attempted it (kind of) with its odd flip-down screen. Other Z models, I'm really happy with the current tilt-screen approach – IMO much better for still photographers (which to me, Nikon is photography-first / video-second type of system).

  15. Sounds like a stable voice of reason, in a sea of confusion and high emotion. Thanks for your honest opinion. Does anyone know if the D850 update to CFE will still allow the use of XQD in the slot?

  16. It’s a strange how influencers demand all these features while not really being photographers themselves . I also think Sony is very clever and has influenced the influencers . Sony is waging asymmetric warfare on Canon and Nikon and so far has done a very good job . This is evidenced in the way that the prominent photography Youtubers are constantly claiming that Nikon is going down and that they need to innovate .

  17. I agree entirely with your comments on Nikon.

I am pleased to learn that they are upgrading software in a manner which thereby upgrades and updates existing cameras – cameras that they have already sold. To do so costs them money. But they do achieve a positive benefit in exchange. They enhance the loyalty of their existing customer base. That must be worth solid gold, to Nikon. Especially in the weakened state of today's market for photographic gear.

At 8:50 you refer to something which puzzles me. Why would anyone with a D5 or D850 or D500 be suggesting they can't get their work done, with those, and without access to the [currently non-existent] Z9? Anyone talking such utter drivel can scarcely claim to BE a "photographer"! Refer 11:30, where you "say it as it really ies"!

  18. I'm looking forward for the CF Express firmware update for my D850. Yes, the XQD is ok but if technology allows faster file transfer, then why not? Think the CF will make a difference especially when shooting 9 fps with the grip. I hope so…
