In this episode we go over the pros and cons of having an AR with a 16″ barrel versus a shorter barrel with a permanently attached muzzle device. Which is better, 16 or 14.5 inch pin and weld? Watch this video and decide for yourself.

I have a 7.5" 5.56 upper that I've had for years that shoots great. If it wasnt for practical ballistics I would keep it! Im finally getting rid of that barrel and not sure for 13.9 or 14.5 upgrade. I have several 16 and 11.5 builds already.
Personally i was going to go 14.7 for a replica build but its somethung you dont see immediate. 1.5" makes more of a difference for literally mounting a bayonet. Other than that you just gain more pros from the 16" barrel…
Why can you not slide off the hand guard?
This is a bullshit rule
14.5 with your favorite qd system.
Vg6 sl muzzel devices are made to slide GB over
You forgot one more option for the 14β barrel, pistol brace and donβt have to pin and weld.
I would like to have a shorter rifle but I wonβt take the risk of the ATF changing rules or confiscating my rifles for something innocuous and then modifying them / moving parts from one rifle to another then changing me. They did that to a guy in California where they took a stock off one of his rifles and put it on his pistol and charged him for owning a unregistered sbr.
Way silver soder and way would you ever use a rose bud? That in my mind would make it to hot! But I'm just a pipe wilder! My ex wife would notice a inch
What size handguard is on the 16β barrel?
What happened with this guy, never uploading anything anymore. He ok???
Did you say or silver solder is also acceptable?
pass ! itβs like wearing a condom , i just donβt do it.
What do you keep looking at? super annoying
Pinning and welding just ruins the purpose of having a modular platform like the AR.
I donβt have a pinned and welded ar, but is it really permanently attached to the rifle? Because I donβt see it so. Canβt you just unscrew the gas block, slide it forward enough to remove the gas tube, then unscrew the barrel nut and then remove the whole barrel, and remove the barrel nut from the opposite end of the muzzle device? That way I can change the whole barrel if I wanted to or am I so wrong?
What mlok rail covers are you using?
All these regulations seem pointless to me
I used a Surefire brake and a bolt on gas block
Barrel nut is larger the the muzzle device
What length handguard is on the pin and weld?
I have a 14.5 what muzzle device would you recommend to pin weld to make legal?
I feel like you shouldnt color the pin to hide itbif you pine and weld. In the unlikely event an aft agent looks at it, they wont be able to see it and might give you a hard time.
It's hard to explain, but I do feel like if you shoot the 16 inch enough that you'll notice a difference when you go with 14.5. There's a tad bit difference in the feel too despite only a little bit of it being trimmed off.
You can easily buy a tig weld machine at home for pretty cheap. Some flash hiders come pre-drilled with the pin hole so you can just thread it on, drill a little into the threads, hammer in the pin, and weld it yourself. So it's little technical work on your part and just simply knowing how to operate the machines at the simplest non-technical level.
Whatcha needz is a 15.99" barrel and then a tax stamp that some guys seem to get a tingly feeling from doing.
Filling out Fed Gov paperwork and being on a registry!
So cool guy!
Some people think they need a 14.5" but they never go shoot after getting it.
Clickbait should have 2 similarly sized muzzle devices
Another excellent, informative video. Thanks Dave!
I don't see why people would give up an inch and a half of barrel.
Especially with a midlength gas tube, bayonet baby
ATF walking around with rulers measuring everybody barrel π
2 inches in the front no one cares.
Throw those two inches in the back you end up in marriage counseling.
What is the welded rifle?
Does pinning and welding effect the accuracy of the barrel?
If barrels performance are based on material twist rates etc etc . Why pricing differ some much between brands even when they have same characteristics?
Would you recommend running a crush washer when pin and welding?
πππππππππ
I feel pretty good about going 16β now. Thanks
Iβm very new to ARβs entirely but I was hoping someone could possibly answer a question for me.
I have a 13.7β p&wβd rifle but I was wondering if itβs possible to remove the entire barrel and replace it with a different one?
Id assume not, as you said itβs not possible to replace the hand guard.
If you could remove the entire barrel Iβd assume youβd be able to replace the hand guard right?
I never would have thought, in the "land of the free home of the brave" we'd have tyrants rulling over us making us comply with the stupidest laws that make no logical sense. 10 years in a cage for a stock, or for not doing a little weld, while they only give violent criminals 1.5yrs for child-M or date-R.
thereβs really no difference in length
Frankly speaking, you can still change the handguard even it p&w. You can unscrew the gas block and move it to the MD. It should have enough space for the gas tube on pistol or even carbine set ups.
